"Intuitive, Managed Cloud IDE with Strong AWS Integration"

4.5/5

What do you like best about AWS Cloud9?

AWS Cloud9 provides a fully managed browser-based IDE that simplifies cloud-native development without requiring local environment configuration. I particularly like its integrated terminal, collaborative editing capabilities, built-in debugger, AWS CLI integration, and direct access to EC2-hosted development environments. The interface is intuitive and allows developers to begin coding almost immediately.

Performance has been reliable for infrastructure automation, Lambda development, Python applications, and cloud engineering tasks. Since the development environment runs inside AWS, developers can securely access AWS resources without extensive local configuration. Pricing is attractive because only the underlying EC2 resources are billed, making it economical for temporary development environments. Cloud9 also integrates well with Amazon Q and CodeWhisperer capabilities for AI-assisted coding workflows. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud9?

Development environments depend on EC2 resources, so performance varies with the selected instance type. Compared to modern desktop IDEs such as VS Code, extension support and customization options are more limited. Since AWS is no longer onboarding new Cloud9 customers, long-term planning for alternative development environments should be considered. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud9 solving and how is that benefiting you?

Cloud9 provides standardized cloud development environments without requiring complex local software installation.

Example: New engineers can quickly provision browser-based workspaces with AWS CLI, Git, Docker, Python, Terraform, and deployment tools already configured. This has reduced onboarding time while ensuring consistent development environments across engineering teams. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Convenient Browser-Based Coding with Seamless AWS Integration"

4.5/5

What do you like best about AWS Cloud9?

What I like best about AWS Cloud9 is that it provides a browser-based development environment, so I can start coding without spending much time configuring a local setup. The integrated terminal, debugger, and code editor make development convenient, and the ability to collaborate with others in real time is especially useful when working on shared projects. Since it integrates well with AWS services, it’s easy to develop and test cloud-based applications from one place. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud9?

One downside of AWS Cloud9 is that it can feel slower than a local IDE, especially when working on larger projects or with an unstable internet connection. The interface is also more limited than some desktop development environments, and because it’s closely tied to AWS, managing costs and permissions can add complexity for new users. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud9 solving and how is that benefiting you?

AWS Cloud9 solves the problem of setting up and maintaining local development environments by providing a fully configured, browser-based IDE. It allows me to write, run, and debug code from virtually any device while integrating directly with AWS services. This saves setup time, makes collaboration easier, and helps me develop and test cloud applications more efficiently. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It integrates seamlessly with AWS services, supports real-time collaboration, and provides a consistent workspace for coding, debugging, and deploying cloud applications efficiently. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud9?

One thing I dislike about AWS Cloud9 is that its development has slowed, and AWS has shifted focus toward newer cloud development experiences. "Zero Setup, Real-Time Collaboration, and Cost-Saving Auto Hibernation"

5/5

What do you like best about AWS Cloud9?

Zero local setup and pre-configured toolchains make it easy to get started right away. I also like the real-time pair programming and collaboration features. The built-in serverless development support is a nice touch, and the cost efficiency from auto hibernation helps keep usage under control. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud9?

The extension and plugin ecosystem is limited, and we feel the performance lags on large projects. It also doesn’t seem to support changes in user size as the number of users increases or decreases, since it appears to provide a fixed amount of space. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud9 solving and how is that benefiting you?

Cloud space helps with processing and enables fast data transfer between requests, and Cloud9 comes with preauthenticated AWS CLI access. It also simplifies AWS credentials and IAM management, making setup and day-to-day use easier. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS Cloud9?

What I dislike about AWS Cloud9 is that performance can feel sluggish compared to local IDEs, especially when handling large projects or complex builds. Its reliance on internet connectivity means offline work isn’t possible, which can be limiting. The interface, while functional, lacks some advanced customization and extensions available in popular IDEs like VS Code. Pricing can also become a concern since Cloud9 environments run on EC2 instances, potentially incurring costs if not managed carefully. Finally, integration with non‑AWS tools isn’t as seamless, making it less flexible for developers who rely on diverse ecosystems beyond Amazon’s cloud. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud9 solving and how is that benefiting you?

The performance may lag depending on internet connectivity, and the interface can be slower when handling larger projects. Its collaboration features are useful, but they aren’t as smooth or feature-rich as dedicated tools like GitHub Codespaces or VS Code Live Share. Additionally, because Cloud9 is tightly integrated with AWS, it can feel restrictive if you want to work outside the AWS ecosystem, and the pricing model tied to EC2 instances may not be ideal for smaller teams or individual developers. Overall, it’s powerful for AWS-centric projects, but less flexible and occasionally less responsive than local or alternative cloud IDEs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is AWS Cloud9 solving and how is that benefiting you?

AWS Cloud9 solves several common development challenges by removing the need for complex local setup, offering a ready-to-use cloud-based IDE that saves time and effort. It addresses collaboration issues by allowing multiple developers to work together in real time within the same environment, which streamlines teamwork and reduces friction. Cloud9 also solves the problem of managing AWS resources during development by integrating directly with services like Lambda, EC2, and S3, making it easier to build and test applications without switching tools. For me, this means faster project setup, smoother collaboration with teammates, and more efficient workflows when working on AWS-centric applications—all of which boost productivity and reduce overhead.
