"Great managed service to reduce code required to serve up data."
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

I like AppSync for its simplicity of not having to maintain a lambda service in front of a dynamodb to serve up recommendations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

It can be cumbersome at first but once things are setup properly, you should not have any issue. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"AWS AppSync = GraphQL as a Service"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

AppSync has full native integration out of the box with many AWS services including Amplify & DynamoDB. It enables the real-time extraction of data from multiple databases. AppSync is totally serverless, so it scales automatically. Not only does it save the time of setting up your own GraphQL server, but there's NOTHING to maintain. Multiple developers can share AppSync code. AppSync allows the developers to focus on their own business logic code, as they spend less time dealing with the data-connectivity that AppSync provides out of the box. As with all AWS servers, AppSync evolves with regular updates which are virtually 100% backward compatible with your existing AppSync code, so nothing breaks. We recommend using AppSync as part of the DRACAL.dev stack of DynamoDB, REACT, Amplify, Cognito, AppSync & Lambda. Together, these 5 services provide long term code stability, extensive documentation and many open source components & code recipes. AppSync boasts virtually 100% uptime. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

There is a learning curve in incorporating AppSync & its important to follow all AWS Best Practices. Using AppSync by itself without the other supporting AWS services such as DynamoDB, REACT, Amplify, Cognito, AppSync & Lambda is not as useful. So making a commitment to the entire AWS serverless eco-system becomes a defacto requirement in getting the most out of AppSync. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Scalable and reliable but not that fast"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

It's very scalable and reliable as it uses Lambdas, the best API you can have to provide millions of requests Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

The biggest problem for us was the speed at it works, we used X-ray to find out why it was taken some times 200 ms and other times 2 seconds.

it seams lambdas are never warm, and even having cache on all configurations the lambda can take random times to answer Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"GraphQL in a Box"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

AppSync lets you build a backend for any app in record time. For apps running react-native, this AppSync becomes a must-have. Further, no other tool out there has the global reach that AWS does. You can't scale Google services in China, so App Sync becomes the goto mobile backend for global apps. AppSync makes it very easy to build a GraphQL service, especially one that connects to a Dyano table. Also from a total cost of ownership point of view, this system is really powerful for a much lower cost point. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

The GraphQL designer leaves a lot to be desired. So plan on writing the code for your services. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Serverless at it's best"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

1. The ability to spin up a new app instance with just the graphQL schema file.

2. Integration with the serverless framework which makes it easier to interact with all other AWS products and makes deployments easier too.

3. DynamoDB is quite solid and scales well compared to many DB's I've worked with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

1. When you need a custom solution that requires having custom mapping templates, it's not easy for beginners and there isn't any solid guide on how to do so, I'm actually writing an article to solve this problem.

2. Error reporting in mapping templates is not well detailed, makes it quite hard to properly debug your application and you end up wasting time with making changes and waiting for deployments to run in order to get the results. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful tool (used in conjunction with Amplify)"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

My team used was introduced to AppSync through AWS' Amplify framework. It was very easy to set up and get going. Amazon's tutorials are quite helpful in describing what's going on. Also, the service does a lot of heavy lifting for you so you can just work on code. It really is great to have request validation, datastore, API, and Auth set up in one go. It also handled offline mode quite well which was a big requirement for our client although Amplify also had a big hand in making offline mode easy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

The Amplify framework along with AppSync is a lot to take in especially if you haven't worked with the set of services that Amplify and AppSync uses. Our team had also decided to decouple the the front end mobile app and the backend API powered by AppSync. Decoupling the two turned out to be troublesome in the beginning. We turned to the Serverless framework and some plugins to continue using AppSync in the backend. It would have also been better if AWS used something other than Apache's Velocity Template Language in the resolvers. That was another item to learn and somewhat of a curveball. "AWS AppSync is lightweight framework which allows you have you back-end supported by GraphQL."
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

AWS AppSync simplifies application development by letting you create a flexible API to securely access, manipulate, and combine data from one or more data sources. AppSync is a managed service that uses GraphQL to make it easy for applications to get exactly the data they need. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

AWS AppSync does not allow to use RDSDB for its data sources, and if you already have data on a Postgres or another SQL database you could not take advance of your stored info so easily. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"AppSync with React and DynamoDB"
What do you like best about AWS AppSync?

Integration with other AWS services (e.g. DynamoDb and Lambdas) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?

Maturity of the service.

We ended up moving away from AppSync to building out our own EC2 instance running Apollo Server. The AppSync feature set wasn't as robust and some features (e.g. DataStore for offline data synchronization) didn't work at the time. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
