  ### 17. AWS AppSync = GraphQL as a Service

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Paul L. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

AppSync has full native integration out of the box with many AWS services including Amplify & DynamoDB. It enables the real-time extraction of data from multiple databases. AppSync is totally serverless, so it scales automatically. Not only does it save the time of setting up your own GraphQL server, but there's NOTHING to maintain. Multiple developers can share AppSync code. AppSync allows the developers to focus on their own business logic code, as they spend less time dealing with the data-connectivity that AppSync provides out of the box. As with all AWS servers, AppSync evolves with regular updates which are virtually 100% backward compatible with your existing AppSync code, so nothing breaks. We recommend using AppSync as part of the DRACAL.dev stack of DynamoDB, REACT, Amplify, Cognito, AppSync & Lambda. Together, these 5 services provide long term code stability, extensive documentation and many open source components & code recipes. AppSync boasts virtually 100% uptime.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

There is a learning curve in incorporating AppSync & its important to follow all AWS Best Practices. Using AppSync by itself without the other supporting AWS services such as DynamoDB, REACT, Amplify, Cognito, AppSync & Lambda is not as useful. So making a commitment to the entire AWS serverless eco-system becomes a defacto requirement in getting the most out of AppSync.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

Test AppSync on a small project first and be sure that you develop your AppSync resolvers according to AWS best practices. Do NOT do any work-arounds in your code, as many times that will prevent NEW AppSync features from working in the future.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Real-time use cases such as Chat, Chatbots, Calendars and other projects where real-time is an absolute requirement. Coding is much more efficient in AppSync. AWS provides an AppSync console for a detailed view and navigation of AppSync Code. AppSync utilizes resolvers which have the benefit of being re-useable when set up properly.

  ### 18. Scalable and reliable but not that fast

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Israel C. | Volunteer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

It's very scalable and reliable as it uses Lambdas, the best API you can have to provide millions of requests

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

The biggest problem for us was the speed at it works, we used X-ray to find out why it was taken some times 200 ms and other times 2 seconds.
it seams lambdas are never warm, and even having cache on all configurations the lambda can take random times to answer

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

It's perfect for separating the data providing layer from your data sources, as you can attach multiple sources and aggregate by request of the client, you make a very flexible reliable and scalable endpoint that is secure logged and has autogenerated documentation. also if your datasource is scalable and reliable too like dynamoDB then you have a fully scalable and reliable datasource to provide to millions of requests. to avoid dynamoDB getting expensive you can enable caching that is also implemented out of the box on appsync.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem to solve is having a endpoint that doesn't goes down and aggregates the data so you don't have to pre-aggregate before

  ### 19. GraphQL in a Box

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Greg C. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

AppSync lets you build a backend for any app in record time. For apps running react-native, this AppSync becomes a must-have. Further, no other tool out there has the global reach that AWS does. You can't scale Google services in China, so App Sync becomes the goto mobile backend for global apps. AppSync makes it very easy to build a GraphQL service, especially one that connects to a Dyano table. Also from a total cost of ownership point of view, this system is really powerful for a much lower cost point.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

The GraphQL designer leaves a lot to be desired. So plan on writing the code for your services.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

-Global reach for a single backend
AppSync has allowed projects that I have architected to use a single common backend globally. Saving thousands in dev costs.

  ### 20. Serverless at it's best

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian N. | Senior Software Engineer Team Lead, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 26, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

1. The ability to spin up a new app instance with just the graphQL schema file.
2. Integration with the serverless framework which makes it easier to interact with all other AWS products and makes deployments easier too.
3. DynamoDB is quite solid and scales well compared to many DB's I've worked with.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

1. When you need a custom solution that requires having custom mapping templates, it's not easy for beginners and there isn't any solid guide on how to do so, I'm actually writing an article to solve this problem.
2. Error reporting in mapping templates is not well detailed, makes it quite hard to properly debug your application and you end up wasting time with making changes and waiting for deployments to run in order to get the results.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Setting up software architecure from scratch given a limited time frame is a bit hectic and at times requires hiring consultants to help out which is not ideal when working with a limited budget. AppSync helps curb this problem by giving us the ability to set up and build production-ready apps within the shortest time possible.

Benefits:
1. Time and budget-saving
2. Out of the box real-time data
3. Easy integration with other AWS products(Lambda, Cognito, Elastic Search)

  ### 21. Powerful tool (used in conjunction with Amplify)

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sowmitra N. | Solution Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

My team used was introduced to AppSync through AWS' Amplify framework. It was very easy to set up and get going. Amazon's tutorials are quite helpful in describing what's going on. Also, the service does a lot of heavy lifting for you so you can just work on code. It really is great to have request validation, datastore, API, and Auth set up in one go. It also handled offline mode quite well which was a big requirement for our client although Amplify also had a big hand in making offline mode easy.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

The Amplify framework along with AppSync is a lot to take in especially if you haven't worked with the set of services that Amplify and AppSync uses. Our team had also decided to decouple the the front end mobile app and the backend API powered by AppSync. Decoupling the two turned out to be troublesome in the beginning. We turned to the Serverless framework and some plugins to continue using AppSync in the backend. It would have also been better if AWS used something other than Apache's Velocity Template Language in the resolvers. That was another item to learn and somewhat of a curveball.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

It'd be advisable to look at the below plugin for the serverless framework.

https://github.com/sid88in/serverless-appsync-plugin

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We needed to stand up a backend API with DynamoDB quickly. As previously mentioned, using the Serverless framework and some plugin allowed us to flexibly use AppSync and its benefits while being able to fine tune setting like IAM permissions and read/write capacity using CloudFormation templates.

  ### 22. AWS AppSync is lightweight framework which allows you have you back-end supported by GraphQL.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Vivek N. | Senior Fullstack Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

AWS AppSync simplifies application development by letting you create a flexible API to securely access, manipulate, and combine data from one or more data sources. AppSync is a managed service that uses GraphQL to make it easy for applications to get exactly the data they need.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

AWS AppSync does not allow to use RDSDB for its data sources, and if you already have data on a Postgres or another SQL database you could not take advance of your stored info so easily.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

I would suggest exploring AWS AppSync to everyone who wants to develop fast, secure & reliable backend for the applications. It will help you reduce your development effort & save the time as well.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use AWS AppSync for hybrid mobile application. Below are some key features:

1. Start effortlessly; scale with your business
2.Real-time subscriptions and offline access
3.Unify and secure access to your distributed data

  ### 23. AppSync with React and DynamoDB

**Reviewed by:** Nicholas C. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 26, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

Integration with other AWS services (e.g. DynamoDb and Lambdas)

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

Maturity of the service.

We ended up moving away from AppSync to building out our own EC2 instance running Apollo Server. The AppSync feature set wasn't as robust and some features (e.g. DataStore for offline data synchronization) didn't work at the time.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

Look to implementing another solution until AppSync matures

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Realtime updating of financial securities. The biggest benefit was integration with other AWS services like DynamoDb and Lambdas.

  ### 24. Great to use with dynamodb but not so much flexibility for integrating other services

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 26, 2020

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

The ease when it comes to deploy and connect to other aws services like cognito and auroradb

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

Velocity language, to handle resolvers..

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nimesh G. | Sr Software Engineer, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 07, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

The abilities it gives to access the AWS dynamo db in most efficient way. Also it provides offline sync capabilities. Which is very useful for mobile application development with React Native. Its a managed service by AWS so its easily scalable. It reduces the requirement of a backend developer. Ans seprate back end platform.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

So far I am not very much experienced on the use of AWS app-sync. So not having any points right now on my list to dislike. Once I get more experience in this may be I will find its short comings. But for there are all positive points about appSync for me.

**Recommendations to others considering AWS AppSync:**

If you want to keep minimum dependencies and have easy to manage setup. Which is easily scalable. Appsync is for you.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We had one requirement of making a mobile app using react native application. Where we used AppSync to skip the development of separate back end platform. And AppSync itself is being used as back end for that mobile app. Which is making that app easily scalable.

  ### 27. GraphQL as a service: quick and easy.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 17, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

AppSync makes very easy to setup a GraphQL server ready to use on production.
It integrates really well with our AWS products: AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, etc.
And even with 3rd party products: for example Auth0 to handle authentication.

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

Having a more fine grained configuration for each query would be nice, though not a critical issue.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Speed to market: with AppSync you can have an API ready for production in a couple of hours!

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 22, 2019

**What do you like best about AWS AppSync?**

This program is amazing to use as the best web software. My company uses this software quite frequently to make contacting clients more streamlined. I love how easy reliable and most of all secure it is considering it is used in 67% of the softwares in the country

**What do you dislike about AWS AppSync?**

I don’t like the setup process. Every time there is an update there can be a lag which means interruption in sales process and we can lose money and client trust this way.

**What problems is AWS AppSync solving and how is that benefiting you?**
