I also enjoy the multiple track options I have and how it lays out the audio on top of the video track, so I can easily see if I have my video and audio aligned. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Avid Pro Tools? IT IS SO CONFUSING. All of the features are some symbol that takes hours to learn--if you choose to tackle learning them all--but that does not include how they all interact. Nothing is labeled well, and I find myself going to the menu bar at the top of my screen to try and find what I'm looking for. Also, it is incredibly easy to click one bit and your entire project be off kilter, off balanced, or erased entirely. There have been times when I have even started up my software and work would be gone! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Avid Pro Tools: Don't. Just don't. In the broadcast media world, Avid is basically outdated at this point. I recognize that Final Cut Pro is considered primitive, but I honestly would prefer Final Cut Pro over Avid any day, and I would CERTAINLY suggest that Premiere Pro is insurmountably better. Avid is also difficult to export and become compatible with other software, so just a heads up on that as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What problems is Avid Pro Tools solving and how is that benefiting you? We tried to use Avid for journalism broadcasting packages, but we found that one has to be highly trained in Avid to have true benefit in it. It is a dance that requires the functions to be used IN A CERTAIN ORDER to achieve an actual high quality piece -- and sometimes going rogue and learning how to use the software in ways it wasn't intended ended up being more efficient in the long run. Music Composer Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) 4/16/2021 "Industry Standard but clunky licensing and poor tech support" 2/5 What do you like best about Avid Pro Tools? The industry standard for music production and post-production. Relatively stable. It can handle as many plugins and audio tracks as you can throw at it without any trouble. Video integration is what it needs to be. I've used it more or less every day for the last 18 years, and I appreciate the recent efforts to freshen up the look and add new, more powerful features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Avid Pro Tools? Clunky and occasionally debilitating licensing through iLok. This is a significant and consistent problem and is reason enough not to recommend Pro Tools unless you need it for industry reasons. They should use a more straightforward, less invasive, or integrated licensing system like the ones used by Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft 365. I use it every day and can honestly report that I run into a licensing issue once a month on average. The need for a persistent internet connection is unreasonable and potentially fatal to a project on deadline. It has been a while since I called Avid tech support, but historically they have not been quick to resolve licensing issues. It's a shame because Pro Tools itself is a fine DAW, worthy of a full recommendation otherwise. Again, the licensing across Avid's product line is clunky at best, and can be debilitating due to the invasive nature of the iLok system. It's not just me who has these problems. They are ubiquitous. Pro Tools is widely used in the film industry and in large recording studios. It is competitive with other major Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) with editing tools and a range of useful effects. Many of these industry facilities use ProTools, so it is good to have an understanding of the software in case you have to work there. There is a real ease of file sharing between these facilities because they use the "industry standard software". Many high end film projects are edited using Avid software and the audio software is completely compatible with the video editing tools. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about Avid Pro Tools? I have worked in studios that owned ProTools, but I would not buy it myself. It is very costly compared to other systems and I do not do large film projects or record symphony orchestra size groups at home, so I don't need all the functionality. ProTools still expects you to pay for annual upgrades by renewing your license, even if you already purchased the software for approx. $600USD. The cloud subscription is even more expensive when compared to other tools such as Apple Logic or MOTU Digital Performer that may be just as good for the task you are planning to complete. It is not economical to use ProTools unless you are working within the Avid family of products or must maintain compatibility with others who are using the software. Pro Tools has always dominated the professional recording market with its historic reliance on the use of proprietary DSP hardware. Pro Tools has always been behind with the times with regard to basic features that have been standard on every single other DAW on the market for around 8-10 years. these drawbacks and extreme price point has shown that it should only ever be used in high budget recording studios. It has since redeemed itself on the price point side of things by moving to a subscription model of payment but is still lacking in terms of features and plugins. Recommendations to others considering Avid Pro Tools: I would recommend Pro Tools to any professional recording studio that currently isn't using the software. Despite its deficiencies it still remains the industry standard for any studio, meaning that projects can be more widely shared and edited. If you are a home studio musician who is only likely to record one input at a time such as vocals or guitar I would definitely not recommend this DAW. It's great that it now uses a subscription model to pay for its use but the features are still completely lacking against ANY other modern DAW, known or unknown. The best scenario for using a Pro Tools HD setup is when recording multi-tracked drums.
