Avalara automates the determination of the proper sales & use tax rate based on what is being sold, and the location of where the sale is completed/work is preformed. The tax calculation is granular for each invoice item. This automation has allowed our company to expand into multiple states, all of which have diferent taxability rules and unique exceptions, as well as taxes at state and local levels. We would have never been able to expand at such a rapid pace had it not been for Avalara and automation of this process. The filing of the many required tax returns is just the cherry on top! Avalara also helps with all the various registrations required to expand into new states, and now offers a very affordable system to manage vendor W-9 forms and 1099 preparation and filing. Avalara is continually developing new product codes as customers bring new product offerings to the market. Our company does some work that is exempt from taxes in certain areas only due to very specific exemptions in the state & local tax codes. We find that the Avalara codes are not alwsy granular enough to address these specific unique exemptions, so custom rules and work arounds have to be developed. What I like most about Avalara is the reporting format—it’s clear, well‑organized, and makes it easy to review and pull the information we need. The process for uploading and approving exemption certificates is also very user‑friendly and efficient. One challenge we’ve experienced is occasional connectivity issues between our accounting ERP and Avalara, particularly when invoices are created, and tax should be automatically removed. In some cases, tax continued to be calculated due to synchronization or tax code issues, requiring deeper troubleshooting. This involved reviewing and adjusting tax codes and, in some instances, removing and recreating customer accounts to resolve the issue. I like how seamlessly Avalara integrates with our existing system, specifically with NetSuite. It runs quietly, and we don't even notice it working, but it performs correctly every time we issue invoices to a customer.
