Because of the wide array of drawing tools in the program, it can be easy to draw details of anything needed for projects. The additional focus on MEP systems can help with more detailed projects. **What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?** It's not a very smart program. Anything drawn requires a lot of editing to get to the level of detail needed, and anything that has to be changed or moved later basically requires drawing the lines all over again and editing those for the new changes. The 3D modeling available isn't very intuitive either, and can still suffer from the same lack of a smart system for moving and editing what's been drawn. **Recommendations to others considering AutoCAD MEP:** Because AutoCAD is primarily a line drawing software, it will require editing and redrawing to get exactly what you want from it. But it's simpler and easier to jump in to, and will be more cost effective for smaller projects or customers with smaller budgets. **What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?** AutoCAD has been in use for years, the level of detail shown in the drawings improving as the software gained more capability. It can be great for small drawings that need to be done very fast. You still have all the AutoCAD tools available, it still functions like AutoCAD. It has lots of specialized tools for drawing ductwork, electrical conduit and circuiting. **What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?** There are some electrical tools that would be nice to have that aren't yet available. We do a lot of duct bank and there is not a tool for that. There are still a lot of draftsman that aren't comfortable with Revit, or have enough experience to complete a project in the allotted time. As a mechanical engineer, I find ductwork design to be easy and quick with this software. The program is very flexible to allow me to tailor my drawings to my or any other firm's standards. Even 5+ years into using AutoCAD, I still find new features and commands that streamline my workflow and save me time and energy. **What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?** While it's nice that the program is so many features, not all of them are documented as clearly as I'd like. Making new MvParts is particularly unintuitive. Many features seem more tailored for a BIM program such as Revit than for a primarily-drafting program such as AutoCAD. **Recommendations to others considering AutoCAD MEP:** If you are just beginning to use the program, I highly recommend taking an intro class or working under an experienced user. The program is so feature-rich that it can be overwhelming at first. It helps to have a firm idea of what you want to accomplish with the program, whether it be pure 2D linework drafting or design using the more advanced features of the program. **What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?** The software is absolutely essential for our business--we don't do any 2D drafting without it. It is very easy to understand what you are looking at in the 3D view and how to adjust and manipulate you design. **What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?** Its not quite as user-friendly as Revit when it comes to advance information. It lacks in creating schedules in comparison and it isn't as easy work with as Revit when it comes to team involvement. It also could be better at communicating with Revit. It would be very helpful if you could import a Revit model into AutoCAD MEP and create a model from that information. **Recommendations to others considering AutoCAD MEP:** If this is the only program you have for modeling, learn everything you can about its 3D modeling techniques. Also, download (or purchase depending on what you need) Navisworks . It is a 3D coordination software that offers a free version. In it, you can fly through the models you have created in AutoCAD MEP and get a better look at what you have designed. **What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have used this program many, many times to coordinate projects. It is still the standard program for construction sub-contractors and it is fairly easy to learn. It also seems to be fairly easy to learn overall. It is most definitely one of the tools I utilize still. **What do you dislike about AutoCAD MEP?** It is not set up for detailing for the final installation of systems, for that you need the Fabrication software package. Though the Fabrication package is an add on to AutoCAD MEP. Our subcontractors are using Revit 2014 and they are having trouble appending the DWG file in Revit because the file is too large. **What problems is AutoCAD MEP solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have solved the problem of working design files by placing them in Revit 2014 and saving them as RVT files. Once the files are appended, they are uploaded to our FTP site for subcontractor use.
