As a student, I don't have much time to work and earn money, but through mTurk, I have made over $600 in a year. My university is also able to send out surveys and get a better response that can be more generalized of the population, which is helpful as we are a top notch research university. No one knows how to get "masters" so it's harder to get higher paying tasks. You can end up wasting lots of time for low paying tasks. Many of the tasks fill up very fast. Recommendations to others considering Amazon Mechanical Turk: Make sure you offer more money to people taking your surveys because this will make people more likely to take them. I like how some of these surveys are so easy and can take like 5 minutes and you earn 50 cents so if you really work hard you can make decent money on the side. I don’t like how sometimes the HIIT will expire after you took a survey for something higher paying (like $2) and then when they ask you to go back to the page and put in the code it’s gone so you can’t get paid. Sometimes if you don’t get paid you are given an email to contact the person responsible for the survey and you just tell them you participated but weren’t compensated. We run into the issue of not being able to use available participants in our location (such as students or the community) for our research, as they are not our target population; however, using Amazon's Mechanical Turk has allowed us to quickly gather data on the populations we study. The best feature has been the ability to set specific criteria for who can participate in the listing (such as having to have complete at least 100 prior HITS, having a 95% approval rating, geographic location, age, work status, etc etc.). You have to pay extra for these screenings (per participant) which can really add up but it is necessary in order to get usable data. Data is also gathered EXTREMELY quickly on MTurk, especially if you pay participants a reasonable amount. We have collected quality information on 500 people over night. It is extremely inconvenient to contact MTurk workers who have completed your HIT to participate in a followup, as you have to do so one at a time, which is not realistic if you are trying to reach 500+ people. We have found a way to do so though a statistical software however this process requires code, is a bit complicated, and is error prone. It would be extremely beneficial if there was a way to contract groups of workers directly on the website. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. Recommendations to others considering Amazon Mechanical Turk: Make sure you have the appropriate funds before initiating a project, as many of the useful features on MTurk require additional fees per participant. Also make sure everything you set up is running properly as soon as it goes live, as it is huge waste of time and resources to post a HIT that has a glitch and still have to pay everyone who participated. You then can cash out by either setting up your bank card with amazon pay OR you can simply cash out with amazon giftcard. They usually take around 24 hours for the transfer. I see that there are many predatory and low-income applicants, in slow times of the year, and Amazon provides virtually no support, no benefits I think that Mechanical Turk offers to work at your own convenience, but also at your own risk. The payment offered for the time invested is not enough, but if you have nothing else to do with that time, you may receive a payment for it. " 5/5 Describe the project or task Amazon Mechanical Turk helped with: I used Amazon Mechanical Turk to get people to fill a survey about my research. For this task, I needed people from the elderly community (Preferably older than 60 years) to fill out a survey. Using this website allowed me to just send out the survey, without worrying about selecting the people or talking to people on the street, saving me a lot of time. The best thing about Amazon Mechanical Turk is that you can actually filter based on the users age and gender, which allows for targeting certain population for your surveys. This great feature allowed me to send the survey only to the elderly community, which is the population of interest in my research. In addition, you can select the amount of money that you want to pay to the people that actually fill the surveys, which is really good since you are not force into paying any set amount. However, I understand that since this service is still in beta, the number of users should only be expected to increase in the foreseeable future. I thing that if there is something that can be improved, is to send notification to the people that have not filled the survey, so they get a second chance of doing it, and the response rate increases.
