The ability to mount many instances at once (apparently thousands - but not tried that many yet!) makes it such a flexible product for any multi server setup. Most of AWS services are billed hourly, so is EFS. Originally I was only testing (knowing it was only costing a few pence) to test out vs using mounted drives to many EC2 instances, but ended up putting it straight into a current project since it fits perfectly as a use case. EFS is fast, it has great throughput and it also scales as your storage size grows (in addition to burst allowances). I was also impressed that there was no need to "pre-provision" like you do on some AWS services like RDS (databases), so there is no wasted space and it is simply metered on the current storage use. **What do you dislike about Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS)?** The main issue with EFS is the price, but to most people the price will not be an issue. Currently $0.30/GB, so 1TB storage is $307.20 per month which for storage (IMO) is overpriced compared to S3. It is very hard to compare the price on that basis though since the cost to setup your own Highly Available storage solution like this would be expensive to start. The second and last dislike is the management of folder / file permissions. Considering you have multiple instances connecting it auto mounts as root. If you have an "apache" user on all your machines, they must all be using the same user id and group id - it will not use the username (i.e. apache) to perform permission checks. It is a slight pain but once working it is fine. **Recommendations to others considering Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS):** If you run multiple EC2 instances that need to share data, its worth giving EFS a try. After reading the AWS documentation and the service info - you should see that its a great tool! **What problems is Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) solving and how is that benefiting you?** Currently it is being used as a back end storage for a load balanced application. The standard Load Balancer (ELB) to multiple Nginx/PHP servers all using the mounted single drive. No need for deployments to all servers, or using Rsync and praying that all files stay in sync. Costs increased a little but moving images, static content etc to relevant services (i.e S3 and Cloudfront for images) managed to keep the storage on the smaller size. ### 21.
