Compared to some of the other options on this list, such as Amazon Aurora, the managed service provided by Amazon frees the developers from the tasks they would otherwise need to handle themselves such as patching, backups and scaling. The degree of differentiation is represented in the auto-scaling, which adapts the infrastructure’s capacity for usage, and costs and performance are optimized. The capabilities regarding security in Aurora that have been highlighted include; Data encryption both at rest and in transit, VPC isolation thus solving the problem on security compliance. The big disadvantage of Amazon Aurora is its cost, which may be much higher than in comparative with other similar databases, and it may be appropriate for SMBs. The usage-based model which is based on the instance, types, storage, and I/O operation is often tough to estimate. Further, the level of dependence on AWS services may pose some disadvantages to the organizations aiming at being flexible the future and using or hopping from one cloud provider to another. Amazon Aurora addresses the issue of achieving high-performance databases yet with low operational complexity. Historically, databases are consuming resources and need frequent management activities such as backup and restore, switch from one master to another, scaling, etc., which are challenging processes. Aurora allows these processes to be automated, and it backup and recovery, and replication are integrated into the service so that data is durable and available. What I like best about Amazon Aurora is its performance and reliability. It’s impressive how it combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of an open-source database. Plus, the fact that it's fully managed means I can focus more on developing my application rather than worrying about database maintenance.
