Because the app is so modular, these can be shuffled, re-shuffled, and customized at will. If there's a feature in another app or an approach to either visualizing or sorting through your data, nine times out of ten you'll find an analogue here. If not that, you'll likely find something that, with a bit of finagling, can serve exactly the same function. I hated it. I browsed around for a bit and immediately closed it. Everything about it was all wrong - but I knew that my mentor, my own personal career coach and productivity guru, swore by it. I use Google Drive as my reference folders. Currently there is no support for a Note that is not linked to a category or a task or a project, and that is honestly fine for me. I depend on the google integrations and other features of Google Drive for tracking this info. The "Procrastination Wizard" feature is worth the subscription price alone. This is what has been missing for me. I love to organize and tweak, but when it comes time to actually DO the work, I struggle. This was my downfall with Trello, ClickUp, paper planners, etc. With Amazing Marvin, I have the organization and features that I need in order to figure out what to do when, PLUS the assistance that I need to get over the procrastination hump. **What do you dislike about Amazing Marvin?** The iOS apps are lacking my favorite features of the desktop / web app. It is their number one priority right now but it's not fully released yet. I loved that the dividing line between Projects and Tasks was highly flexible. That suited me and my working style. But when new jobs, first at Google, then at Apple, pushed me into the Mac world, there was nothing like it. Even the expensive leader of the pack, OmniPlan, which my employers paid for, was just too rigid in its structure. So I started trying to build my own with Keyboard Maestro. I got a little way into that when another KBM Forum contributor suggested I might like Amazing Marvin. Wow! Marvin has added a major level-up in the Project/Task flexibility that I was looking for. Above Projects they have Categories. These are the classifications that are always there, even if you are caught up on all your tasks (ha!). They start with Home and Work. I have eight now, with several subcategories. Projects are things that can be marked Done and can then come off your list. Categories can have unlimited Sub-Categories. Projects can have unlimited Sub-Projects. You can convert between Sub-Categories and Projects as you need. Tasks are the individual steps of a project and when needed, a Task can have Sub-Tasks. If you need more levels of Task, then the upper task can be changed to a Sub-Project, which is a simple menu click (available in multiple menus). **What do you dislike about Amazing Marvin?** I did notice that the learning curve was a bit steep. It took me a while to learn how to navigate, to recognize that I could move back out the nested stack of views with the Esc key, and more. It seems like the Help and the tutorials are about 70% there; they are written by experts who are not making beginner mistakes or having erroneous presumptions. As a career technical writer, I am very familiar with how hard that is to accomplish so Marvin is at the same level as many of the big boys. They make up for it in the patience of their support team. Examples include time tracking, the GTD Weekly Review, notifications, time blocking, calendar view, planning ahead, "soft" deadlines, and many, many others. Smart Lists deserve special mention: these are dynamic lists of tasks/projects matching certain (programmable!) criteria that are usable in a multitude of ways. Want to get an alert when there's a task within a particular project that is due this month, but hasn't yet been scheduled? Marvin's got you covered. Amazing Marvin's design and features draw heavily on research into productivity, and aim to make completing tasks as frictionless as possible. Because of the option to enable only the strategies you use, Marvin is powerful without feeling cluttered or overwhelming. Its visuals are both pleasing and highly customizable. The developers are incredibly active, responsive, and engaged with their users. New features and improvements are rolled out every few days to weeks. Perfect for those who like to overhaul their productivity system and try new tactics regularly. **What do you dislike about Amazing Marvin?** There are currently no multi-user collaboration features, so Marvin works best as a personal system, not for teams. However, collaboration features are on the developers' roadmap. The system can be a little slow and heavy. Again, improvements are planned for this. For people who don't enjoy tinkering with their productivity system, Marvin may be too complex and too pricey. For people who do enjoy such tinkering, there's nothing that compares. **What problems is Amazing Marvin solving and how is that benefiting you?** I used to switch between different to-do management and productivity apps multiple times a year - switching it up is just part of how I stay productive. I've tried different configurations of about 50 apps for managing todo's, time tracking, prioritization, incentivizing, and planning. Marvin has it all, and I intend to opt for the lifetime subscription once my current billing cycle is up. Everything is in one place, everything interacts smoothly, and everything can be shaken up according to my whims, which gives me a new boost of motivation. ### 17. This is much more in-sync with what I try to follow from Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People." I also love that I have the ability to add multiple types of dates to tasks in Marvin: Due dates (deadlines), DO dates (days I've scheduled to work on a project), end dates (soft "artificial" due dates for the sake of planning), and even start dates (the tasks disappears from view until it is time to start working on it). Unlike Todoist, Marvin actually takes advantage of my screen real estate and allows me to see everything related to a project all in one place. Notably, Marvin takes the todo list from the left side of the screen and puts it elsewhere (unless you don't want it to). This is called the Master List and I've discovered the value of having more customized daily views to work off of instead of having to see and manage the entirely of my project list. The biggest pro for Marvin - and the biggest knock against Todoist - is the ability to see my projects and tasks in so may different ways. Todoist's recent decision to disable the ability to see sub-projects and their tasks when viewing a project is dumbfounding. It was this decision that led to my shopping around and finding Marvin. ### 18.
