By performing structural analyses on fully-featured CAD assemblies within minutes, SimSolid is the game-changing simulation technology for designers, engineers, and analysts. It eliminates geometry preparation and meshing: the two most time-consuming, expertise-extensive, and error-prone tasks performed in a conventional structural simulation. Multiple design scenarios can be simulated quickly under real-life conditions. Early CAD models, in any common format, can be used. SimSolid tolerance of imprecise geometry means that, unlike CAD-embedded simulation tools, there is no need to simplify complex geometries before analyzing designs.   ### 1. The concept itself is really good, however further development is required.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

The concept itself is promising, and it can already be used for smaller models.  The classic products, like Hypermesh, Optistruct, Motionsolve, Radioss, etc., are amazing packages.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

As of 2025, based on my real-life experience in the mining industry, dealing with welded steel structures, it works only with smaller models. As soon as the model becomes more complex or larger, it fails to function. I diligently try every release, always involve Altair support, but the conclusion is so far the same: for serious tasks, I need to go back to Hypermesh and a proper solver.  Also, the UI is overly simplistic and lacks professional functions. Unfortunately, a very high token requirement is paired with the lack of robustness. As the concept itself is promising and the development is continuous, I hope it will be a daily tool in the future.

It should help solve real-world problems with the meshless concept.

I had so much trouble with it that I gave up and I had some help with the Altair support. Not a good experience for me.

IT is good to use with an existing geometry that needs assessing quickly

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

It is brilliant to have a reliable FEA alternative in the cloud which frees up my PC for other tasks, and solves large assemblies quickly. It is great that if I upload new STEP files to the same project, the software copies the analysis settings to the new files. Great that there are no installs to deal with.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

Simsolid Cloud is too restrictive on the number of bodies/facets it can handle, which means I often have to simplify the geometry- a task that shouldn't be required with this software! I understand the cloud version might need some restrictions here, but if I could double the amount of bodies or facets, this would make analysis of large frames much more usable.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Analysis of large assemblies and frames which mix traditionally shell, beam and solid idealisations, which are time consuming to set up with traditional FEA. With this software I can run multiple iterations early in the design process.

User friendly and meshless method is good.
Supports various CAD formats.
Good for estimation.

It supports Windows only and it's license is costly. Requires high performance workstation.

As we can get 3D modelling so detailed analysis can be easily done by engineers before manufacturing is done. It lets us put multiple parts virtually. It can convert 3D to 2D drawings and helps save lot of time.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

That it is so simple and easy to learn how to use, no unneccessary functions. It is working very well to add files for simulation/calculation to SimSolid, when it approves files such as Parasolid, STL and Inventor, which I usually work with.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

I really dislike that you can not Undo and Redo (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y) in Altair SimSolid. This is really frustrating many times, especially if I accidentally delete something. I do not like how difficult it is to find support and answers on my questions related to Altair SimSolid online, searching on the internet.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Altair SimSolid is making it possible for more of our Designers to work with calculations and Simulation, when it is so simple to learn how to use, because of the few steps one needs to take to make an enough accurate simulation/calculation.

It is good especially meshless method and it is good precision and provide good structural result. Also it is user friendly and easy to learn

Not as much mostly it is not industry standards it is great for rough estimate but to do convergence study it is hectic we have to do all over from start.

Mainly structural analysis through meshless techniques.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

It is very capable as it can handle levels of detail and number of parts that other traditional softwares just wouldn't be able to. It is really qucik to solve so feedback loop is short. It also has some really great features and depth of analyses such as the random vibration and thermal. Interface is pretty simple to use and it has a relatively easy flow. PDM link to Onshape is great and I want more of this please!

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

It can struggle on some geometry, quality of CAD seems to be indicative of qaulity of results. It is getting to be quite a lot of tokens to run but the basic package is still helpful. Would be amazing to link to other HM tools.

Complex cad geometry that would normally need a really fine mesh and iterating design concepts quickly through pretty ocmplex simulations

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

Easy to use, it allows quick iterations to support designers. A lot of tutorials are available on the web and the support, for quite tricky models (dynamic ones), is very helpfull and reactive. The way the welds can be analysed allows very efficient post-treatment. The software installation and maintenance is easy to manage.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

The main issue is that Simsolid, whatever the benchmarks results, is not yet knowned sufficiently. That can be an heavy task to convince customers and partners to be confident in the results of the analysis. It can be seen as a project risk. Another point is the licence management (nominative) that make difficult to share the tool with colleague.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Welded structure mainly (static and fatigue with constant stress amplitude). The results for stresses in welds is straight forward.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

1) Extremely simple to use, quick customer support, and easy to pick up and apply.
2) The Solving time is quite impressive in simple static simulations with linear/non-linear materials.
3) Modal Analysis results are quite good and fast.
4) Very ease to setup boundary conditions, and loading force.
5) Very good features of bolted connection and spot weld joints, which make it quick and simple to apply.
6) Very usefull for analysing 3D printed components.
7) Perfect for complicated Geometry, large assemblies undergoing only remote loads with simple contacts like Bonded , frictional.
8) Auto arranging of Assembly and connections geometry is good, defining the contacts region is so simple and speedy.
9) Easly integrated with other CAD softwares for importing the models.
10) Performed well in case where traditional FEA have mesh sensitive results.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

1) Non-linear with separating contacts are not yet supported.
2) After certain number of steps, when the geometry starts showing large deflection, the SimSolid starts showing errors and distortion.
3) Very Limited connections options.
4) Cannot add desired incremental test points, have to create induvial studies. Also, cannot plot specific required results graphs like force vs displacement for these specific points.
5) Does not have option constrain a specific Axis DOF.
6) Cannot justify the solution settings of Max. number of passes and refinement option. Changing these settings results in significant change in results so it is not reliable option to have. Need more robust guidelines of using these features.
7) Seperating contacts with non-linear geometry is still not supported yet.
8) Cannot request desired output graphs, like Reaction force vs Displacement. Have to manually record results for each point. And also, cannot assign Displacement Vs Time graph as well for input.
9) Contacts names can have more justified name like separating contacts and separating/closing are difficult to use according to their usability.
10) The GUI and viewing the geometry experience like Pan, rotate can be improved. While pan-ing and rotating the model, sometimes the animations will stick in the process.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Used where tradinational FEA shows mesh convergence and even fine mesh results in inaccuracy and take significant time to solve.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

The ease of creating large models with several components quickly and which provides very fast responses due to the fact that it does not work with finite elements.
I also recently didn't like to know that Altair is changing the AU policy for using SimSolid. The 2024 version will have to have more AU than I purchased and paid for maintenance, making it impossible to use the software in the 2024 version.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

It needs to improve the response and post-processing options, with more configuration options for the interface and the items that make up the post-processing window.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For modal analysis and linear structural analysis. SimSolid helps me with modal analysis to check resonance frequencies in conjunction with many components and complex geometry. In other CAE software, I would spend about 16 hours generating finite element meshes, but in just 2 hours I can do a complete analysis and read the results.

While Altair SimSolid excels in speed, efficiency and ease of use, it has some drawbacks,has high licensing costs, and offers limited tutorials, which can hinder new users. Despite these cons, it remains a powerful tool for many structural analysis applications.

Most of the structural simulations we are performing by using Simsolid. The major advantage of meshless concept saves a lot of time to us and able to get the validation reults in a short period. It is comparatively very quicker than traditional FEA approach.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

Welds and contact conditions are much easier to define in SimSolid than other FEA codes that I have used in the past.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

Not being able to edit geometry in SimSolid. It would be extremely helpful to be able to increase or decrease the thickness of plate elements directly in the software based on the results. As it stands right now, these changes need to be made on the original CAD model then re-imported for reanalysis.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Recently I designed permanent formwork for a mine's underground grizzly pocket. This formwork was to remain in place as a permanent liner after the concrete was placed. SimSolid allowed me to perform the analysis directly on what my designer had modeled. Previously I would have had to go through the process of simplifying the geometry and creating a seperate FEA model. Coupled with Inspire, I could also tweak the design and learn where stiffeners would best reduce the stresses.

Designers can make more simulations themselves to save time of simulation experts. Relatively big models can be solved ny using their laptop. Also for simulation expert it saves time when simulating thin structures natural frequencies.

FEM solvers like Optistruct are faster when used in large server as simulation expert.

Natural frequencies especially for thin structures where FEM would need midplane meshing.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

I like the simplicity of SimSolid. Also, the results are quite correlate with fea results so I go on use the simsolid for first couple of iteration until i am confident that design can go ahead for fea. I also like the simplicity of how it captures the weld.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

Some error prompts it can improve to let user know where it has made mistake. Or some default actions which user must do before firing simulation by making those option by default appeared

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use it for vehicle design. Currently on the scale of 10-20 parts.

Altair SimSolid is an unparalleled tool, allowing you to evaluate design concepts in seconds until you find the one that performs best and meets the specific requirements of each project. The learning curve of Altair is very fast, with short, intuitive, and sufficient training sessions to get you started working on your own projects.

There are two aspects of Altair SimSolid that I find most noteworthy: (1) Automation of preprocessing, and (2) the evaluation of new models. (1) Reading complex assemblies is very fast, and the software is extremely capable of correctly recognizing contacts, welds, and even bolts/nuts, without requiring CAD simplification. (2) Once a simulation model is created, it is very simple to duplicate it and apply it to a new geometry without making major adjustments.

I use Altair SimSolid in my projects because it allows me to evaluate the performance of complete assemblies at a very low computational cost, speeding up my design processes. Finally, it is worth noting its compatibility with other Altair products, enabling the verification of models with traditional finite elements (with mesh), complementing the analysis with topology optimization, or even evaluating multiphysics with EDEM.

It's not a problem specific to Altair, but once you've experienced simulating without a mesh and getting results in such a short time, you feel that it would be great to have an equivalent tool for other physics, such as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).

The most helpful feature about simsolid is its quickness in pre-processing a model. When in need of a quick simulation for verfifying things, Simsolid is the best because you can quickly generate the model.

There are few downsides related to it. If I were to find some disadvantage, I would say it is the hard time you will have when trying to track down the incertanties inside the model. But honestly, if you got to this point you should just use Hypermesh...

There are two major advantages.  First,  you can bring in large assemblies like an dozer or excavator frame and it will easlily connect or determine the contact between items that are not contacting or that are interfering. This allows one to bring in files or components that are designed for manufacturing like large weldments without having to alter them first to have exactly face to face contact.  The other is that after bringing in the large assembly, you do not have to mesh it to be able to do contact analysis.  Also, even with contact, the analysis runs extremely quickly for the complexity of the model

It would be nice to be able to have more options for loading for points and lines especially prescribed displacement.

We have found SimSolid to be an extremely fast way of evaluating the displacements and stresses in parts, only taking minutes to get the results. Together with the simplicity of use and lack of need for meshing, it allows our design engineers to perform a basic check themselves, so reducing demand on the stress team. Tsis means SimSolid  sees regular use within our engineering teams.

We have also seen an overall reduction in use of our licence units due to the reduced run times involved. Implementation is easy due to it's quick and easy to install for users who don't require the full functionality of other larger software. Engineers have found SimSolid easy to integrate into their workflow.

Have always found the support from Altair to be excellent. Knowledgable and responsive staff.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

Our experience with SimSolid has excellent. It handles complex shapes and large modules with  speed and efficiency by skipping the traditional meshing step, allowing us to test designs and make decisions faster.

The best part is that SimSolid integrates seamlessly with our CAD software, including Creo Parametric, UG NX, CATIA, and others.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

Our experiance with SimSolid is Limited Detailed Mesh Control.

The software allows for quick analysis using exisitng 3d models. Allows us to check details which we can't model accurately in our traditional strucutral software with out having to invest time into full FEA modelling.

Bit of a learning curve translating models from Autocad based 3d and implementing boundary conditions and loading.

Helping to analyze specific framing issues at complex joints to ensure design intent is being met.

Simsolid is easy to use and also cuts off a lot of time that is required to set up a model for FEA in other softwares as it doesnot use mesh.

The user interface could improve as the icons can be little confusing.

We tried simsolid for doing stress analysis on some models and the results were fast and accurate. So this software is basically saving time.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

The embedded modeling tools create an easy to use workspace to render the results for FEA and Fatique.  While there are some areas that have room for improvement, our engineering productivity has increased with the use of this software.  The subscription element which permits the use of more than one software and floating license capabilty is attractive.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

SimSolid can add a bit more explanation on the use of the tool to make workflow more effecient and less dependant on support.

**What problems is Altair SimSolid solving and how is that benefiting you?**

FEA and fatigue analysis training would be helpful.  Existing material requires support from the technical team.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

The prime advantage is of course the speed and accuracy. The ability to, within literally a few minutes, understand the complex mechanical or thermal behaviour of an assembly is literally a game-change. Yes, that term is overused, but in 30 years of performing and leading teams undertaking CAE, this is the most amazing and revolutionary tool I've ever seen.
For use by designers: you get to see the performance of your part at times chosen by you, without having to engage specialists (although as a specialist I would recommend having them help set up the problem, boundary conditions etc!).
For use by experienced analysts: whilst planning your analysis using traditional FEA tools, why not spend 2 minutes more with SimSolid and find the answer that you will get to in hours / days / weeks? Why would you not want to invest thoat trivial amount of time to get your result? It's also perfect for a V&V perspective, as it's an entirely differnet technical approach to traditional FEA, different software, and you won't have to perform all those defeaturing tasks that you get asked questions about later: "does removing that notch in your FEA mesh hide a fatigue hotspot?".

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

It is honestly hard to think of an issue with the software itself. Frankly, the difficulty I am having is getting people to use it as it is intended to be used ~ leading the horse to water is one thing, getting them to use it as part of daily life is proving to be quite another.

Mechanical, thermal and dynamic behaviour of structures and components.

**What do you like best about Altair SimSolid?**

Personally, I use it a lot in tradeoff studies, when it is necessary to model contacts / preloads, so that I can get a feeling about the adequacy of the local design solution without having to apply modifications on bigger models. Also, it is vey handy for analyzing complex shapes quickly, and to apply design tradeoffs while assessing the impact of such tradeoffs quickly.

**What do you dislike about Altair SimSolid?**

So far, not many drawbacks. Sometimes, it is a bit difficult to manage the large number of automatically generated contacts and related properties, however I feel that it is more a user issue I have due to the fact that I use the code sporadically, rather than on a daily basis. In the end, advantages are largely outnumbering drawbacks. The fact that SimSolid engine is now available as an option inside Altair Inspire is also very handy.

it provides an excellent support both in the design / pre-design phase and in the detailed verification of small parts

The gain in time and agility in obtaining results compared to standard FEA is the biggest difference. It allows for more fluidity between design and structural optimization. Structural analysis becomes part of the development process, thanks to its ease of use, instead of being a powerful and costly tool. USER FRIENDLY.

Lack more powerful tools compared with FEA counterpart.

Cost. With the practicality of use, the occasions when structural calculation is deemed valid are widely feasible, allowing for cost reductions in more products.
