AlmaLinux OS is an enterprise Linux operating system used across the globe by enterprises, supercomputers, and hobbyists alike, but it’s guided and built by the community. We were the first downstream RHEL clone to be released after the announcement by Red Hat that support for CentOS Linux was ending, and we shifted to maintaining RHEL compatibility in the wake of Red Hat’s announcement in June that they would no longer be releasing their SRPMs. Our goal is to provide a stable, long-term option for folks who have historically used CentOS Linux, and for whom CentOS Stream is not an option. I use AlmaLinux OS for my Zabbix 8.0 server. I appreciate its RHEL compatibility, easy installation, and stability. The enterprise-level stability and 10-year LTS support really stand out for me, along with the quick vulnerability patching. I experience fewer unexpected outages from updates, and security fixes are quickly delivered. The long-term support reduces the frequency of upgrades, which I find valuable. It eliminates compatibility errors with the RHEL-optimized U.S. tech stack that powers our entire business. This means I can run essential tools like AWS EC2, Azure AKS, Stripe, PayPal, QuickBooks, and CrowdStrike exactly as they're intended, with zero modifications or missing libraries. The initial setup is also overwhelmingly straightforward and low-effort, even for our 2-person lean IT team managing a hybrid AWS/Azure U.S. cloud/on-prem infrastructure. I appreciate AlmaLinux OS for being a calm and dependable platform that I can trust to keep running without surprises. I mainly use it in environments where stability takes precedence over flashy features, such as managing servers and handling background services. It closely mirrors enterprise-level systems while remaining accessible and community-driven, making it great for both professional workloads and skill-building. I find it reliable for learning automation, scripting, and system tuning because it behaves consistently and encourages best practices. Its transparency and community-driven nature build trust and eliminate long-term uncertainty. I like that it lets me focus on my actual work by staying out of the way and providing a sense of control and predictability. The system performance is steady, resource usage is sensible, and updates are planned instead of disruptive. When CentOS moved upstream of RHEL we needed to find another clone to use as our primary Linux distro. We liked Alma because it worked in the same way that classic CentOS did as a free distro. We couldn't afford to license RHEL for the couple dozen Linux hosts we have, and had used CentOS for years. Alma was a very strong alternative to CentOS. Managing Alma servers is the same as managing RHEL, CentOS, and Rocky servers. The knowledge learned on the other distros is totally transferrable to Alma. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com. What do you dislike about AlmaLinux OS? Unlike Rocky that aims to be bug for bug compliant with RHEL, Alma does choose to diverge from RHEL in some minor ways. AlmaLinux is a great free enterprise-grade alternative to RHEL. It fills the hole left in the Linux ecosystem left by CentOS moving upstream and becoming more of a test platform like Fedora.
