We were the first downstream RHEL clone to be released after the announcement by Red Hat that support for CentOS Linux was ending, and we shifted to maintaining RHEL compatibility in the wake of Red Hat’s announcement in June that they would no longer be releasing their SRPMs. Our goal is to provide a stable, long-term option for folks who have historically used CentOS Linux, and for whom CentOS Stream is not an option. We liked Alma because it worked in the same way that classic CentOS did as a free distro. We couldn't afford to license RHEL for the couple dozen Linux hosts we have, and had used CentOS for years. Alma was a very strong alternative to CentOS. Managing Alma servers is the same as managing RHEL, CentOS, and Rocky servers. The knowledge learned on the other distros is totally transferrable to Alma. **What do you dislike about AlmaLinux OS?** Unlike Rocky that aims to be bug for bug compliant with RHEL, Alma does choose to diverge from RHEL in some minor ways. It fills the hole left in the Linux ecosystem left by CentOS moving upstream and becoming more of a test platform like Fedora. It is a great distro for production use. ### 9. The community has even created a tool to make that migration simple. There is both a server and a desktop version that you can use and Alma is alread being used heavily as a replacement for CentOS so it is pretty dependable and only gets updates when stable. **What do you dislike about AlmaLinux OS?** Being downstream for updates makes this distribution stable but not cutting edge. Similar to CentOS there are some hurdles when updating to new software versions because of this. **What problems is AlmaLinux OS solving and how is that benefiting you?** AlmaLinux is our choice to replace CentOS which has gone EOL. We use it to power our Cloud servers as well as dedicated server environments. It is stable, easy to transition to, and works great as a low overhead server environment. ### 15. We are now upgrading these servers and are using AlmaLinux to do so. AlmaLinux is very similar to CentOS and RedHat, so it is easy to start working on it quickly.
