# Best API Development Tools

 *By [Adam Crivello](https://research.g2.com/insights/author/adam-crivello)*

API development tools allow users to design, build, simulate, and fully test the functionality of their custom-built application programming interfaces (APIs) in a secure environment. These tools help the user with the pre-production requirements for APIs by enabling developers to ideate, set design guidelines, and ultimately build and test APIs under one dashboard. Once an API is published, developers use [API management tools](https://www.g2.com/categories/api-management) to govern it. Some [API marketplace](https://www.g2.com/categories/api-marketplace) solutions contain tools for editing APIs, but those tools are less focused on developing and managing an API and are more focused on choosing external APIs to benefit the actual product.

To qualify for inclusion in the API Development category, a product must:

- Provide native tools to design and develop APIs
- Allow parallel development and team-wide visibility throughout the development process
- Provide simulation and testing capabilities for pre-production APIs

 ### 15. [Beeceptor](https://www.g2.com/products/beeceptor/reviews)
Beeceptor is a mock server and service virtualization platform that helps QA teams simulate APIs, increase coverate, remove backend dependencies and shift left, and test integrations earlier in the development cycle. It is used by QA engineers, SDETs, automation teams, and frontend developers who need predictable, configurable API behavior without relying on real upstream systems. Beeceptor provides virtual services (service replicas) for REST, GraphQL, SOAP, gRPC, and other protocols, allowing QA teams to move forward independently and reduce delays caused by external dependencies. The platform is suitable for shift-left testing, CI pipelines, contract validation, and performance workflows where controlled API responses are required. ## Key capabilities include: 1. Multi-protocol support across REST APIs, OpenAPI-generated mocks, GraphQL schemas, SOAP/WSDL, gRPC, CRUD routes, and Mutual TLS. 2. Stateful mock servers that store per-request variables, lists, and counters to simulate multi-step workflows. 3. AI-generated mock data that reads schema structures and produces realistic, context-aware JSON responses. 4. No-code and low-code configuration using visual rules, with deeper customization via a template engine that supports IF/ELSE, SWITCH, REPEAT, and JSON operators. 5. Support for delays, error responses, conditional logic, data correlation, and dynamic payload generation. 6. Creating a Mock Service directory, multi-level mock services, test data management, and having full governance model. ## Benefits for QA and engineering teams: - Faster test execution cycles by removing reliance on real backend systems. - Parallel development and integration testing across distributed services. - Consistent, reproducible responses that support automated testing and CI/CD pipelines. - Improved coverage of edge cases, negative paths, latency conditions, and schema-driven scenarios. - Reduced cost and reduced usage of rate-limited or metered third-party APIs. ## Security Beeceptor includes enterprise-grade security features suitable for regulated environments. It supports SSO/SAML, audit logs, IP access controls, header masking, and role-based access. All data in transit and at rest is encrypted. Beeceptor is compliant with SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 requirements. ### 18. [Apify](https://www.g2.com/products/apify/reviews)
Apify is a full-stack web scraping and automation platform that helps anyone get value from the web. At its core is Apify Store, a marketplace where developers build, publish, and monetize automation tools called Actors. Actors are serverless cloud programs that extract data, automate web tasks, and run AI agents. Developers build them using JavaScript, Python, or tools like Crawlee, Apify's open-source web scraping library. Build an Actor once, publish it to Store, and earn when others use it. Thousands of developers already do this - Apify handles all the infrastructure, billing, and monthly payouts. For everyone else, Apify means never building from scratch. Apify Store features 15,000+ ready-made Actors for extracting Amazon product data, scraping Google Maps listings, monitoring competitor prices, pulling social media content, generating leads, and hundreds of other use cases. Configure the Actor you need, run it, and get your data. Behind the scenes, Actors handle proxy rotation, CAPTCHA bypassing, JavaScript rendering, headless browsers, scaling, storage, and scheduling. Everything runs on Apify's cloud infrastructure with 99.95% uptime. The platform is SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, and CCPA compliant, trusted by companies and organizations such as Intercom and the European Commission. Run Actors through Apify Console, integrate them with Zapier and Make, or connect them to AI frameworks like LangChain and Hugging Face to feed LLMs and vector databases. Apify also provides an MCP server that lets AIs like Claude discover and use Actors as tools dynamically. This means an AI agent can ask "find the top 10 Indian restaurants in San Francisco" and automatically use the right Actor to scrape Google Maps for that data. Use cases include competitive intelligence for tracking prices across e-commerce, lead generation for extracting and enriching business contacts, market research to gather reviews and social media sentiment. You can monitor SEO to track rankings and backlinks, and AI training to crawl websites for LLM context. If there's data on the web, there's probably an Actor for it. Apify has residential and datacenter proxies, browser automation with Puppeteer and Playwright, automatic retries, error handling, monitoring dashboards, and APIs for integration. Schedule runs to keep data continuously updated. Export to JSON, CSV, Excel, Google Sheets, databases, or push directly into your workflows. Beyond Apify Store, the Professional Services team builds and maintains custom solutions. Enterprise customers get dedicated data experts, custom integrations, and long-term project maintenance. Start on the free tier with $5 in prepaid monthly platform usage. Paid plans scale based on compute power, storage, and proxy usage (see: https://apify.com/pricing).

## Buyer Guide

### What You Should Know About API Development Tools

### Most Popular FAQs

#### What are API development tools?

API development tools are software platforms that help developers build, test, document, and manage APIs throughout the development lifecycle. They typically include features for designing API schemas, sending and inspecting requests and responses, automating test suites, generating documentation, and, in more advanced platforms, managing API gateways, versioning, and access controls. The category spans lightweight tools used by individual developers for quick testing all the way to enterprise platforms that govern API infrastructure across large organizations. The right tool depends on whether a team primarily needs a testing and documentation workflow or a full API lifecycle and integration management layer.

#### What does API mean in software development?

API stands for Application Programming Interface. In software development, it refers to a defined set of rules and protocols that allow one application to communicate with another without exposing the underlying code. APIs are how modern software systems exchange data and trigger actions across services — connecting front-end interfaces to back-end logic, pulling data from third-party platforms, or integrating tools like CRMs, payment processors, and databases. In a business context, APIs are the connective tissue between the tools and systems an organization runs on.
