"Open Source PIM Pleases End-Users and Developers"

What do you like best?

Akeneo has a really tough job -- how do you simultaneously cater to end-users that expect an intuitive experience managing products, while also keeping up with the demands and expectations of the Open Source software community?

I was most pleased that I didn't have to choose between a great experience and a great ability for my development team to build and customize as we needed. Overall flexibility of the platform was the key feature, as my organization was willing to shift rapidly in terms of merchandising and new product sets.

What do you dislike?

The off-the-shelf connector between Akeneo and our Ecommerce platform (Magento) that we used for the original integration did not perform, which resulted in a difficult and longer-than-usual integration. This connector was poorly designed, and Magento has since recommended another connector that is API-based.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

For our end-users, we solved the problem of waiting for products to load, and to be saved -- changes made on the Akeneo platform were instant. Data imports worked. We were able to add over 50,000 products to our product catalog in a 3-4 month period.

"PIM 4All"

What do you like best?

Simple to use, web-based, nice and modern interface, well documented, modern tech-stack, easy adjustable/customizable, opensource, marketplace with many free-to-use plugins available.

akeneo has great employees: passionate, friendly, helpful and always working for a good solution.

I like their marketing materials: good and nice-looking, well written and easy-to-read, interesting and trending toppics, many different guides and handouts available. Well documented system and a great community to seek help from.

What do you dislike?

The channel restriction in akeneo EE.

System and attribute administration of the system via GUI can be improved. Ex. those are a sample of things which cannot be managed over the weg-GUI, they have to be managed in files:

- migration/definition change of attributes

- attribute rules / smart attributes

- Metric units

Missing of true attribute/value inheritance and overwriting.

References should be able to hold additional information. Ex. Product A has a reference to Product B and Product C. The reference to Product C should be qualified by a description "upgrade for hot and wet environments" and a comment on how to use those two products together.

Attribut groups should be nestable (hirarchy).

Recommendations to others considering the product:

One thing is the system and implementation, but most important are the data.

With any IT project, but especially with PIM projects: plan your data very well. Data gathering, sources, onboarding, neutralisation, enrichment, validation and export - data is too often not taken serious enough. A lot of good projects fail because they undersetimated the efforts needed to have a acceptable data base.

Start simple, take your lessons and grow continuously. With akeneo you can easily setup your system up and running in 3 months. Keep it simple and then when you release phase 1, you can start using the system and have early wins and gains. If you go live with a lean system, the users only need a short training and wil then have a steep learing curve. Then you can add features, functionality, integrate other systems and additional channels.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

1. Single Source of Truth - reduce the fragementation of information over many systems and Excel lists to a minimum, by defining PIM the data master for Product Information.

2. Product display on website - we do not have a shop but we have a product display feeded from akeneo.

3. Automated generation of technical Datasheets - by implementing InBetween and in-house build templates we can now generate the complex Datasheets out of akeneo by one click.

4. Supplier data onboarding - Instead of sending us PDFs, where we had to manually copy the data into the PIM, our suppliers now type in the data directly into our system.

What Product Information Management (PIM) solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Great Interface for business users"

What do you like best?

I really appreciate the ability to setup very granular access and front-end displays. This capability facilitates sensible creation of business roles and procedures which can be easily adapting to changing needs and priorities. We will be using the programmable and customizable features much more in our second phase. Hoping they will prove robust and easy for a qualified developer to work with.

What do you dislike?

I disliked the the third-party contractor/consultant model, but have much better enjoyed working directly with Akeneo through the assigned Customer Success Manager. Hoping that the programmable aspects of the software are robust and easy to use. Jury's still out, but I'm hopeful!

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Ensure you have a qualified data analyst and business analyst on staff to realize maximum value. The power of this thing really comes into play when you are able to connected it other systems, such as the ERP, and modify the business processes of the organization to fully utilize it.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our primary purpose is to sit between our ERP and E-commerce platform. Since production launch we have had much better control of how our product data is displayed. We have been able to be much more responsive to our sales-driven operational culture. Our next phase will include utilizing the programmable rules and making better use of the CLI and connectors. We hope to put much more automation in place, making new product adds and data maintenance much easier and more error proof.

"Great PIM. Cannot be more happy!!"

What do you like best?

Akeneo is very intuitive to use. Sure there is some planning that is involved in how you would like to enhance the data, but once you do this. Updates are simple. Its definitely best in class. It enables us to keep different catalogs for different countries, house multi-lingual content etc. But the #1 benefit of this platform is the ease that this platform is adopted in the organization.

What do you dislike?

There are 2 gripes that are minor that I have.

1) Image field is great. However, having image gallery would be nicer. I have Image1...10 fileds to house all the images, but this should really have been simple media gallery to house all images for the product. I beleive this is in Enteprise edition, but not in community edition. Not big deal as there is work around.

2) Revision control system is excellent. However, when someone in team does bulk import using import profile, the creator of profile name shows in import when it should be the user's name. It makes it hard to troubleshoot and go back pin-point individuals who did update in bulk. This is helpful, only because when we want to know who changed the content (in error), we can help go back to that individual and train them.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you need a flexible, robust and multi-lingual system this is by far the best in the market. The learning curve for average non-IT users is very easy too, so it will get adopted easily in any organization. This platform should be used as repository to house product content. This is best tool for organization that build the product content from scratch. If you need millions of data and really are not doing any transformation/cleaning up to this data, better to go with content syndicators like CNET, Etilize, Icekat etc. The product shines when you need to enhance the original data you got to create better content for your systems / customers.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Akeneo has transformed how we manage product data. We have central repository that can be used as to syndicate information to our partners, power our website and manage multi-language content. It is so easy that it requires minimal training and the bulk update/upload feature is nice to quickly fix stuff on hundred of SKUs. The revision control system is fabulous as we know when / what changed and who did this as well.

"A nice, lean and clever PIM"

What do you like best?

Akeneo is easy to set up. It has a good user experience and the feedback from those people working with it is great. They ways to handle your products, the completness-score and the families help a lot in everydays work.

What do you dislike?

We have some smaller issues with our huge number of products (almost 1 Million)

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Take some time for integration and tell your users to be open minded for new ways to work on product data

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We improved our productdata and the workflow of enriching productdata.

Now new data is way faster in the webshop and the time to market is reduced with also reducing the amouth of manual work.

"A great tool to manage your product data"

What do you like best?

The tool is very easy to use. It has been designed to be hands on in a few minutes. The administration and the set-up is really very simple.

The fact that it's open source has also 2 main advantages : First a lower cost compared to the main competitors on the market. Second, you can easily make it evolve and adapt it to your company and organization. The custom entities enable you to manage data in addition to all the attributes that exist on the product.

What do you dislike?

Management of permissions is sometimes not very easy. Using a big number of languages makes things sometimes tricky to manage and the display on the screen can become fuzzy.

The standard mass import/export methods are not very user-friendly.

Merchandising functionalities would be also a very helpful additional feature.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Akeneo is really a great tool that can be used very quickly, whatever the size of your company. The best thing being that -unlike most IT tools- you may adapt the system to your own company's needs (organization and products) instead of adapting your company to the tool.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Collecting and centralizing product data for the company worldwide (more than 30 countries, 20 different languages). The target is to hold around 300K SKUs.

The main goal is to be able to distribute data to third-party systems (ERP, CRM, BI, Web) and to produce documents (catalogs, brochures, datasheets) both for internal use and for our costumers.

"The transition from messy to tidy in zero steps"

What do you like best?

The growing number of excel files per supplier multiplied by the ever growing number of our suppliers not only wasted an enormous amount of time - image opening them one by one from the shared drive - but also made it very difficult to Keep the data clean and tidy throughout the constant alterations and updates which are very normal in our Business. With akeneo, cleaning up the data and ensuring Consistency is a rapid and efficient process. Akeneo has been a great support, both akeneo software and akeneo People working with us.

What do you dislike?

I am very fond of native functions and a little hesitant to add any third party add ons or bundles - it is probably just my personal taste. That is why I wait impatiently for the new Releases with the new Features and they just cannot come fast enough, e.g. I am waiting for the possibility, to make calculations e.g. via rules directly in akeneo fields.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Try to learn first the full landscape of possibilities and features Akeneo has on offer so that you can set up the database accordingly

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The very first benefit is cleanliness and consistency of the data, which is our most important asset - essentially, data is a major part of our company's final product.

Akeneo also enables fast and consistent changes and iterations, which is great for start ups like ours. This way we can develop and improve faster.

One other great benefit is working with suppliers differently. Suppliers at our company have got a measure of control over their own data - and who knows the suppliers' data better than suppliers themselves?

"A Better Interface for a Better Experience"

What do you like best?

Akeneo's out-of-the-box experience is straight-forward and intuitive enough for users of varying technical expertise to grasp with ease. As one digs deeper into the more advanced features, queries, exports, etc., it allows even greater efficiency.

What do you dislike?

I had wished for a way to more easily change the format of columns. For example, changing a "text" column to one with limited options, it would be beneficial for Akeneo to make a list of the unique values and convert that data.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

This PIM helped our employees feel more comfortable about the product information process thanks to the intuitive interface. If you are looking for a "first PIM" to get your company comfortable, I would highly recommend Akeneo.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As the world turns to online shopping, being able to export product data faster than the competition can be the difference between making the sale or being the secondary option. Akeneo allowed for faster data manipulation, quicker exports, and even allowing customers access to our system with their own custom set of permissions.

"My best project"

What do you like best?

Akeneo was easy to implement and there is always new features

It is a user friendly interface and the training was very short for the users as they understand very quickly how to interact with it

What do you dislike?

We had some problems with the performances

You need to add specific develoments to cover the needs but when there is a new version release, it is not that simple to follow Akeneo as it takes time and money

Recommendations to others considering the product:

akeneo has a lot of partners to help you build the best project

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Now we can publish a website with emotionnal and technical datas

We started from nothing and very quickly we were able to have a good enrichment of our products

Even our suppliers were happy to help us on the tool

"Easy to use and nice features!"

What do you like best?

I really like the easy UI. It helped our employees find their way in the PIM very fast.

What do you dislike?

Some features seem unfinished and therefore are not usable for us. Also, we had a few major bugs with some older version when working on Associations which made them practically useless.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Be sure to setup the basic settings (e.g. Channels, Categories, etc.) correctly and according to your business needs.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We used to have 7 different product databases and were able to merge all of them into one. Instead of working on the same product 7 times in 7 different database with 7 different people, we now have 1 person who does all of it in one step on one plattform on one SKU

"Excellent Product Management for All!"

What do you like best?

Akeneo has provided us a solid platform to build out our product information in an efficient and scalable way that far exceeds the capabilities of our other systems which do not have PIM as a primary (or secondary) focus. Additionally, the flexibility to customize and add functionality to the platform while maintaining easy upgradability is key to allowing us to put in the place the rules we need based on our specific product info.

What do you dislike?

As with any primary system that handles a large amount of specialized data, the customizations needed take time and effort to properly build out, test and improve upon to fully realize the system's potential. This is not a problem with Akeneo itself, but just a process that must be gone through thoroughly to best use the system.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Go through a demo first off but then, for easy of implementation, make sure you have detailed requirements for how you want products, categories and data well thought out so you can best take advantage of the various things that the system offers.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our primary inventory system does not have much in the way of actual product management capabilities beyond the basics needed for inventory control and certainly cannot fulfill the needs for web site display or other channels. Adding all this information as well as deriving certain attributes from what exists within the inventory system was a time consuming and manual, error-prone process. Akeneo has helped to add in routines and processing that can be accomplished automatically so that we can focus on adding in additional data that truly adds value.

"Akeneo for Web and App'"

What do you like best?

UX is great

easy to customize exports -> not much time required for largely custom content

All in all, akeneo allows us to save a lot of time managing our product catalog over our 2 channels

What do you dislike?

went throuh a lot of bugs in the beginning.. Now it is stable

A few improvements (already told to akeneo team) in order to improve assets management.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Costy, but ahead of competition

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

As said above, we save a lot of time. Our catalog is more consistent than ever, and in 3.5 different languages.

We have a (very) small team who is only very partially dedicated to our PIM, and still, catalog is consistent.

"An open and customizable PIM"

What do you like best?

It's easy and very friendly to use.

The Mass edit helps use to save a lot of time.

What do you dislike?

The dashboards need to be more detailed.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

To configure very well the PIM, the most important part is to think about the Product Modeling.

After the creation of the attributes, I recommand to test the performance when using Mass Edit.

Actually, there is no verification of simultaneous access. The last user that saves the product will over ride the values.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The client needs a centralized database with all product information. Now the information are not more stored in excel file.

What do you like best?

Easy to import changes. Easy to add your products from multiple suppliers. Good connectors for Magento. Slack team is very helpful.

"A great way to manage product information"

What do you like best?

Akeneo was a great way to sort out a spreadsheet nightmare for an apparel brand with hundreds of products and multiple languages. The excel connector was handy and the bulk import made life easy, once all of the product information was tidied up at least. The fact that they state the community edition is forever free helped reduce any apprehension before trying it out. The fact that it can integrate with Magento was a major reason for choosing this solution.

What do you dislike?

The lack of user permissions when using the free version. But it's free, so I'd say that's understandable.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed to centralise and streamline product information generation and management using a browser based solution. Those goals were met.
