Linode's offerings are not too extensive, but this is a strong point for me. It is an easy-to-use solution that responds well to what I need, with different storage options ranging from $3. I could say Linode's simplicity is the biggest reason I use it. It is also very stable. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** Linode is inexpensive compared to its competitors. However, it doesn't have that many features, so the price is inflated. However, I understand that it is a product for a particular audience. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Linode to store virtually all of my repositories, internal services and CI systems. It also serves very well as website hosting, although it is true that it is not our primary objective. Linode has become my primary choice when I need to deploy any application. The team responds quickly to a small group and provides accurate solutions. Their stability is excellent. It is one of the main points we consider when looking for a virtual machine. We can purchase several Linode plans with different characteristics and for defined periods. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** It is a bit frustrating to use Linode on multiple machines. I often get navigation bars when the screen I'm using is not of sufficient resolution, which limits my work quite a bit if I' not using an appropriate machine. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** I do software testing with Linode. It is an excellent way to measure the performance of applications on machines with different resources. Of course, it is not a precise method, but it is the closest to reality without spending so much money. It is also an excellent environment for security testing without risking our machines. However, it is a very convenient solution we have adopted for years. Its payment methodology is convenient because you pay only for the time you want, even for short periods. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** It has some bugs that hinder the experience: I can't adjust the Linux server specs. However, it does offer several Linux OS, databases, and even some interesting versions of Microsoft to experiment with. The option to add partitions to the server is attractive because it allows you to do several risky tests without compromising the entire virtual machine in vain. It is nice to have some security in this aspect. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** The user interface is very bad because it is complicated to adjust the resolution to the browser's size. This makes it uncomfortable to use unless you have a screen with a lot of resolution. It's excellent to create many powerful instances for testing new services and then destroy them when we're done. I typically receive a response to my support tickets within an hour, and they follow up to ensure that the problem has been resolved. Linode also has a fixed price for most services, so my monthly bills have never deviated by more than a few dollars from the budget. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** There is a problem with their data storage stability. They even have an IRC channel where community members hang out and discuss various topics, and staff are also present to answer questions. I love the fact that their manager front-end is free and open source software. You could host it yourself if you wanted to. I like the billing model, which allows one to provision resources for a short time and only pay for what one uses. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** My previous version of this review said "I hope they don't get bought out by a larger company and lose what makes them great. They seem to be on a major marketing push in the last couple of years. There have implemented some great new features, but I hope they become any less friendly as a result of this growth effort." Well, they allowed themselves to get bought out by Akamai, and this disappoints me greatly. They are no longer independent. **Recommendations to others considering Akamai Cloud Computing:** Take full advantage of Linode's excellent documentation. You will learn a lot about administering servers, and it will only benefit you in the long run. Linode doesn't hold your hand as much as other "web hosting" providers. I consider this a good thing, as it allows for the most flexibility. If you do need extra help with migration or other technical tasks, they offer Professional Services to help you. There is also a "Managed" offering for incident response to keep your website running while you're not available. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Linode to host a personal server consisting of e-mail, web server, and other various services that I use. It's excellent for this purpose. Of course, I don't get a lot of traffic, but I have seen others use Linode to run popular websites and have no issues. ### 13. This was especially important to me as I wanted to select security software and manage my own settings in more detail. For those who might want more handholding, there are managed solutions, but for me simply having a Linode on which I could completely configure the software was key. Also, I have been able to resize my primary linode (running as a VPS), twice now as traffic increased, with no disruption to my web presence. With a growing company, that is critical. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** I have no complaints. As noted, however, if you want closer support, you would need to used one of the managed solutions. I think the like/dislike is going to depend on how independent you want to be. While the documentation is good, I have had problems running into dated documents when installing some software. I'm not quite sure how this would be solved, because in many cases the older docs were still required for other configurations. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** With the configuration I set up I was able to basically end security issues that had plagued me elsewhere. I realize this is software I installed, but Linode made it possible for me to carefully track best practices throughout and the result has been four years without any serious issue. In addition, I have used a second Linode off and on to test software, mostly implementations that I would like to use as a company. The smallest Linode is economical for this purpose, and then if you decide to implement an online solution (such as accounting in one of my tests), you can just expand the Linode. All of the servers and services from Linode have been rock-solid for years. They have continued to improve their user interface and controls as well. With the way that Linode competitively prices their offerings, there is just not good reason to incur the hassle and expense of running your own data center for Internet connected servers and services. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** Their VPS offerings come in "tiers". You can not choose memory, storage, and bandwidth allocations separately. The combinations are well balanced, but sometimes you just need more memory without increased storage, or vice-versa. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** By using Linode for our largest Internet connected services, we do not have to spend nearly as much on office infrastructure. We do not need a dedicated high speed uplink to the Internet. Also, our data canter costs have decreased to almost nothing. While they don't have the plethora of services that the Big 3 have (AWS, GCP, Azure), Linode has the basic building blocks (VMs, block devices, object storage, etc.) to build our infrastructure without compromises. Another plus is their predictable pricing: outside object storage costs that we can control, most of their services have a fixed amount, so our monthly invoices have never strayed from the budget outside a few dollars. From time to time we coordinate some prototypes to test some new service and is awesome to be able to spin a bunch of powerful instances, destroy them after we are done and only pay for the hours used. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** Their Object Storage service (S3-like) isn't as stable as I would have liked. They have had various outages and slowdowns this year, but I assume that's because the service is still relatively new. Also, I'm not fond of the lack of multiple certificate support in their load balancer service. They have stable datacentres/servers with professional uptime, high bandwidth/speed, DDoS protection. They may have a small team but everyone makes effort to be especially helpful & friendly. Their website's interface is good so their VPS are easy to administer; they offer several options for logging into a remote shell including for emergency maintenance like over world wide web (WWW) or SSH into the datacentre your VPS is on then into that, in case you lost SSH connection to that itself. They also have excellent terms of service including more freedom of expression/speech (seemingly Constitution-respecting Americans) than any European VPS companies ever allow. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** This isn't such a VPS' company's fault on their own, but I wish any such as Linode would have some open hardware able to run GNU/Linux-libre, and not just GNU operating systems using Linux kernel with binary blobs, but there's probably a scarcity of open hardware and it may cost more to run for less power in the sense of system resources. We are looking for the following qualities when selecting VPS suppliers - Phone support for urgent problems - Quick response times - Consistent performance - A architecture that minimizes the risk of outages that affects more than a few servers at once (e.g not using SANs and other shared infrascructure/clusters) - Predictable and limited maximum time to resolve VPS outages - API support for fully automated maintenance We used to have our own virtualization platform, but after switching to using external providers such as Linode we have both freed up a lot of time for our tech team, but also reduced the cost and increased the performance. We never expect to have 100% availablity, so what makes Linode different is the way the outages are handeled. We have realized that it is better to have predictable patterns in the outages and clear honest communication, than to livie in an imaginary world that pretends to have 100% uptime and falls aparts as soon as something goes wrong. ### 36. The options provided for different operating systems are extensive. Furthermore, I appreciate and enjoy using their administrative interface. It is really based on intuitive design and great UX practices. This allows me to be able to quickly complete the task I might need to do without much trouble, and continue on with my work. One example, is the capacity to grow/shrink the server without much trouble at all. Finally, they provide a wide range of locations to host your servers, which was important in our case. There is a wide range of community documentation and support pertaining to setting up servers. Good job Linode! **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** My biggest complaint is that some of their servers on the same IP rack as myself are sending out loads of spam, and therefore our entire IP address range has been frequently flagged as spam. My emails are then being flagged as spam with a few providers such as Outlook and Gmail. Further research indicated that this was a result of a few bad actors on the same main IP. I wish that they would provide a collection of servers that had a more zero-tolerance for spam and would remove bad actors. I believe that this would help increase the reputation of their clients, as well as add a value-added feature to their services. **Recommendations to others considering Akamai Cloud Computing:** If you require a dedicated server, Kebernet or cloud-base service this is a great option to consider. We also realized that the capacity to easily clone an existing server and deploy it for testing is an amazing asset. Maintenance is never an inconvenience and only ever lasts a short amount of time. Setting up DNS is also easy. Linode is consistently pushing updates to make their UI even better and more effective. Linode support staff is also wonderful, very quick to respond, very communicative, and always very happy to assist. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** I wish they offered more services like domain registration, storage solutions. I wish that their tutorial material was updated more often and kept up to date with newer versions of Linux, newer versions of python, node, etc. I also with that Linode acccepted more forms of payment for my servers, such as various cryptocurrencies. **Recommendations to others considering Akamai Cloud Computing:** Go with a company like Linode if you're unsure of what VPS to use. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm using Linode to host my personal website and develop various web apps. I like how easy it is to set up SSH keys and get started in no time. And I love the dashboard that shows how much traffic and CPU my website uses at any given time. They also offer a lot of tutorials and blog posts to get started with many of the things I want to use Linode for. I've also realzied just how usefull it is to build and deploy a website myself using a VPS rather than using a provider like wordpress. I've learned a lot of linux/unix skills and various tools as a result of using Linode and it has helped me tremendously during my regular software engineering job. ### 43. Pick a size and an OS distribution, and you're off to the races! Performance is excellent -- fast CPUs, fast disks, fast network. Having worked with AWS, I really appreciate Linode's simplicity. I don't have to spend a week mired in permissions just to get something up and running. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** My biggest complaint used to be that there was a hole in the list of instance sizes -- a Nanode for $5/mo, but the next bigger was $20 for a significantly larger instance, but I just looked to verify the truth of what I'm writing here, and now there is a $10/mo instance that is essentially a Nanode with double the RAM, which is exactly what I wanted! When I'm done writing this review, the next thing I'll do is upgrade one of my Nanodes. Problem solved! With that problem solved, Linode is everything I want it to be. If you insist that I come up with a downside: Linode doesn't offer the vast array of managed services available from the big providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, although with the recent additions of object storage and managed Kubernetes, we're getting closer! **Recommendations to others considering Akamai Cloud Computing:** Go for it! I really like the incredible robustness and performance of the hardware, as well as the easy administration of the instances. When I need a quick, simple, and solid machine to run web apps and services used by me and clients, I chose Linode. Linode has incredible hardware speed and scalability. The pricing is very fair, and instance management is easy. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** There is a couple things Linode could improve. VPS scaling down or up should be smoother and faster. True billing per minute or second of VPS usage with a cheap persistent storage would be awesome. I would also like to see an ultra cheap VPS option for microservices. **What problems is Akamai Cloud Computing solving and how is that benefiting you?** The biggest problem solved with Linode is having a cloud provider that is both cheap and robust. Linode is the very definition of reliability. Their hardware works flawlessly 24/7/365. The machines are not impacted by excessive use of other instances. There was a short period of time about 8 years ago where they were hit with DDOS attacks. Their clear communication during that time was what kept me with them while many started switching to other services, but they've proven to be reliable ever since and I have never found any reason to move away from them. Their Virtual Servers are still cheaper (and less complicated to setup) than the "Big" players like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. For the last few years I've deployed all my linode services using forge.laravel.com - I can't think of anything else though could be more seamless. **What do you dislike about Akamai Cloud Computing?** I've found Linode to be slower to introduce "newer" trends such as S3-compatible storage, kubernetes and serverless deployments than their competitors.
