Block storage software is used to store structured object files. This storage architecture is highly scalable as it organizes files into standardized formats. These blocks provide less metadata than [object storage software](https://www.g2.com/categories/object-storage), where individual files maintain clumps of additional information, metadata, and identifiers. Block storage software also allows the ability to edit individual components of data blocks without accessing the entire object file.

Companies use block storage solutions to create large, scalable systems that operate with efficient workloads. They also reduce overhead related to storage management and optimize database performance.
