"The worst decision we made was choosing ADP Totalsource"
0/5
What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

There is nothing that I like about ADP totalsource. They ran our payroll/HR/benefits for the past three years and it's been extremely difficult working with them at every turn. The platforming/interface makes no sense and is not intuitive whatsoever. Running reports takes 1-3 days as I either have to make a case or spend a bunch of time figuring out how to get the report I need. The assigned specialists take at least 2-3 days to respond to any question you have and you can't call them directly half the time and they redirect you to someone else or their phone line almost every time. They mishandled our state SUI filings for Massachusetts for MONTHs as we got notices saying we owed $25k in back taxes that hadn't been filed by them. And lastly, after hooking us into contracting with them on 'cheaper benefits' for the first year, the renewals over the past two years have cost us an additional 35-50% of the previous years costs. About an additional $150k a year increase in healthcare. This is what happens if anyone or a dependent gets extremely ill on ADP's benefits - they up charge you, and make it impossible to stay on the higher quality plans. I would absolutely recommend you use any other platform. We have switched to Prestige and it is miles ahead of this platform. All these positive reviews must have been paid for by them on here, because that's the kind of company they are, all face. My experience has been nothing but disappointing and frustrating. "ADP TotalSource Streamlines Payroll, HR, and Benefits—All in One Platform"
3/5
What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

ADP TotalSource excels at reducing the administrative burden of running a growing business, especially by giving small to mid-sized companies access to enterprise-level health and 401(k) benefits. It brings payroll, HR guidance, and compliance monitoring together in a single platform, making it easier to manage these essentials in one place. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

My frustrations with ADP Total Source are high costs, inconsistent customer support, and processes that can feel overly rigid. The fees are bundled often calculated as a percentage of your payroll and the pricing become less attractive as your organization grows and overall payroll increases. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Rebecca Jordan of ADP TotalSource

Hi Brandi,

We appreciate your review which inspires us to deliver top-notch service. It is nice to hear ADP is helpful to HR. And we are especially appreciative for you sharing your honest feedback - this is helpful to our team.

"ADP TotalSource for the win!"
4.5/5
What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

ADP is cost effective. We have compared multiple PEO's and switched even once or twice as our company needs changed. But we always come back to ADP because their benefit plan offerings are better and the overall cost is lower for better techonology. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

We could use a little quicker responses when we have an HR emergency that we need our HRBP to help with. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"User-Friendly Dashboard and Courteous, Responsive Support"

What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

User friendly, intuitive interface/dashboard; customer support is courteous and timely, and follow up is always given to ensure any issues are handled Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

Payroll processing times were shortened and the interface on the Support tab to initiate a Case for an issue is a little clunky and not as user-friendly as other areas of the ADP TotalSource site Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

The people are very knowledgeable, but equally important, actually CARE about my business. They don't fake it-they actually want good outcomes for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

TotalSource is fairly complicated, but it's much better than it used to be. And help from a knowledgeable resource is always a click away. And after a few pay cycles it all happens naturally. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great one-stop shop!"

What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

The customer service is excellent. I receive responses to issues quickly via their portal or over the phone. I have a dedicated team of professionals I work with frequently, which is great for building relationships. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

The software can feel a bit archaic and clunky at times, but once you get the hang of it and setup your favorites, it gets easier. It just looks a bit dated, and the UI looks the same as it did 10+ years ago when I first started using ADP. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

Safety consultation and expertise is top notch. Anne Dorrance is incredible to work with. She's a safety expert who can help create practical solutions employers and employees will actually use. Very proactive and responsive, with excellent options and solutions for challenges. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

The worst new client onboarding/implementation process I've ever experienced. The worst customer service and support I've ever experienced; even my dedicated service team takes 1-3 business days to respond to any type of inquiry. My payroll specialist was changed 3 times in 2 years, my HR specialist was changed 4 times in 2 years. When we escalated issues, the Client Liasion threw his team under the bus and did not help us fix the issues. They setup our S-Corp owners incorrectly which impacted payroll taxes and created a need for issuing W-2Cs. I caught the error, they said it wasn't an error, I pushed, they said oops yes it is an error, and it took more than 6 months to resolve, we couldn't even get regular updates from them. Everything with ADP was difficult, cumbersome, and took forever. Their payroll tax teams takes a minimum of 6 months to respond, even when you ask to escalate an issue. They failed to set up SUI in a new state for us, failed to pay the taxes for 2 quarters as a result, failed to respond when the state threatened to issue a tax warrant for non-payment, and we paid the outstanding tax directly to avoid the warrant. We gave notice after a 60% increase to our medical plans with no other options provided to us (the alternative medical plan provided saved only 5% over the 60% increase option); we had to ask them about a PEO carve-out option or ASO option, and they took 3 weeks to get back to us. As someone who has worked both in-house at a PEO and worked with multiple PEOs as a client, I truly cannot believe there is a PEO this bad out there. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Rebecca Jordan of ADP TotalSource

"All-in-One HR Platform, But Reporting and UI Could Be Smoother"
3/5
What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

HR, payroll, benefits, and compliance all in one place. It helps simplify a lot of my admin work so I can spend more time supporting employees instead of juggling multiple systems. I’ve also found the platform to be reliable and easy to navigate for day-to-day tasks. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

The reporting can be a little clunky, and sometimes it takes more clicks than it should to find what I’m looking for. I’d also love to see a more modern interface Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Enterprise-Grade Payroll Accuracy and Always-On Compliance with ADP TotalSource"
5/5
What do you like best about ADP TotalSource?

ADP TotalSource has been a standout solution for payroll accuracy and compliance management. What sets it apart from standard payroll software is the co-employer model. Rather than simply giving us tools to manage payroll ourselves, ADP takes on shared responsibility for execution. That means dedicated payroll specialists who know our specific tax setup, built-in validation checks that catch issues before they become costly errors, and proactive compliance guidance across all the states we operate in.

The compliance piece has been the most meaningful benefit. Employment law changes constantly at the federal, state, and local level, and keeping up with it used to require significant time and outside counsel. With TotalSource, we have always-on compliance support that flags regulatory changes as they happen and helps us stay ahead of them rather than reacting after the fact. The reduction in compliance-related risk has been tangible and genuinely hard to put a dollar figure on.

From a UI and integration standpoint, the employee self-service portal is clean and intuitive. Employees can access pay statements, tax documents, and benefits information without routing requests through HR, which has meaningfully reduced our administrative overhead. The reporting tools cover the standard use cases well, and the platform scales without requiring us to bolt on new systems as we grow. For any small to mid-sized business that wants enterprise-grade payroll accuracy and compliance coverage without building a large internal HR function, TotalSource is a serious option worth evaluating. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about ADP TotalSource?

The most consistent frustration with ADP TotalSource is reporting depth. Standard reports cover routine needs, but anything more nuanced requires manual workarounds like exporting to a spreadsheet, which feels out of place on an otherwise modern platform. Custom report building is not intuitive, and the filtering options are limited compared to what you would expect at this price point.

On pricing, TotalSource is not a budget option. The co-employer model commands a premium, and while the ROI is real when you factor in compliance protection and payroll accuracy, the cost structure is not fully transparent upfront. Smaller businesses evaluating it should budget carefully and push for a detailed breakdown during the sales process.

The UI is generally clean and functional, but certain administrative workflows feel like they were designed for power users rather than occasional users. Navigation between modules can require more clicks than necessary, and new team members occasionally need hand-holding to find routine features.

Integration options cover the major platforms well, including accounting and scheduling tools, but connecting to more niche or industry-specific systems can require additional configuration or third-party middleware that adds complexity.

The AI features, particularly the benefits enrollment guidance, are promising but still feel early-stage. Recommendations are helpful in straightforward cases but can feel generic when employee situations are more complex.

Support quality has been mostly strong but occasionally inconsistent depending on which specialist you reach. For a platform where compliance accuracy is the core value proposition, that variability is worth flagging. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
