what i like most about indesign is just how much control it gives you over every single detail of a layout, like once you've used it for a while you realize nothing else really comes close for serious print or publication work, the way you can set up master pages, paragraph styles, character styles, it sounds boring but it completely changes how fast you can work on multi page documents

the typography control is honestly unreal, kerning, tracking, baseline grids, optical margin alignment, stuff that sounds technical but once you understand it your layouts just look way more professional and polished, canva or word can't even touch that level of precision

i also really appreciate how well it plays with the rest of the adobe ecosystem, placing a linked illustrator file or photoshop image and being able to update it without redoing anything is such a smooth workflow, especially on bigger projects with lots of assets

and the preflight and package features are something i genuinely rely on, before sending anything to print you can catch missing fonts, broken links, color issues all in one place and then package everything neatly for the printer, that kind of professional output control is what makes indesign the real deal for anyone doing serious design work Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

honestly the biggest thing is the learning curve, like it is NOT a beginner friendly tool at all, when i first started it took a while just to understand the difference between the selection tool and the direct selection tool, or why text wasn't flowing the way i wanted, it's the kind of software where you have to put in real time before it starts feeling natural

the performance can also be frustrating sometimes, on heavier files with lots of linked images, long documents, or complex master pages it can get sluggish, and occasional crashes without saving properly have cost me real time before, especially on deadline, now i'm just obsessive about saving constantly

the subscription model is another thing that genuinely bothers me, indesign used to be something you could just own, now you're locked into the creative cloud subscription and if you stop paying you basically lose access to your own files in a usable way, for freelancers or students that cost adds up fast and it never really feels fair

and some things that should be simple are just weirdly complicated, like tables in indesign are functional but nowhere near as intuitive as something like word or even illustrator in certain cases, and working with long documents that have lots of cross references or footnotes can get messy fast if you're not really careful with your setup

InDesign is a great bit of software I mainly use for anything we want to get printed like leaflets or brochures along with case studies. Its easy to create templates to use again and again.

Can customise everything within the document so you can align it with the company brand guidelines and have full flexibility to quickly make changes.

Sometimes you get a formatting glitch within a paragraph but that seems to have stopped with the update so hoping it has finally been resolved.

I like how I can make most everything I need in InDesign. I especially like the direct selection ability without having to mess with layers, unless I want there to be layers. My biggest gripe about InDesign would be the inability to edit a photo's color mode quickly. If I just need to apply a black&white filter to a photo, I can't do that within InDesign easily.
