InDesign was easy to transition to mainly because they give you the option of setting the tool menu to how Quark had it. This program does everything I need it to do and more. I love the libraries and how you can auto-populate sections of your document. Very easy to use. **What do you dislike about Adobe InDesign?** I can't stand how they handle boundary boxes! You can move the object in the box, or you can move the object box itself. You have to double click to move the image inside the box, and I am always manipulating the wrong one. I dislike this feature. Also, I don't like the page menu, I feel it could be done better. I still think Quark does some things better. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe InDesign:** If you are new to page layout programs InDesign may seem intimidating. I recommend watching the tutorials on the Adobe site and doing the learning videos. It will help a lot! **What problems is Adobe InDesign solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm not solving problems; it's a very user-friendly page layout program. The most significant benefit is how seamlessly it integrates art from Illustrator and Photoshop and automatically updates the art when you make a change. Love that! You can also edit the original art and open the native programs from inside InDesign. I could go on and on. ### 35. The tools allow you to think big-picture and almost without thinking do all of the small stuff, like aligning, distributing, making sure text and colors are standard to your office document style, etc. I like the ease of using InDesign in conjunction with other Adobe products such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Regularly in the InDesign documents I produce, I am incorporating vector graphics from Illustrator and edited photos from Photoshop. **What do you dislike about Adobe InDesign?** Really the only complaint I can think of is that it can be frustrating being someone who works in other Adobe software because the keyboard shortcuts are different across the programs. It would be really nice if they could match up, at least for the basic tools they share. I also wish that some of the tools from Photoshop could also be available in InDesign. Sometimes you have to do more graphic elements the long way in InDesign when it affects a whole page as opposed to individual images. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe InDesign:** Because of the expense of InDesign, be sure you need it before you purchase. While it is a great program that offers many powerful tools, if you have no need for the powerful tools, I would recommend sticking with PowerPoint or something similar. If you are doing any kind of publishing, I do recommend InDesign, especially if you work in other Adobe programs already because they all work so nicely together. InDesign is good for bringing print documents to life that include elements you created/edited in both Photoshop and Illustrator. **What problems is Adobe InDesign solving and how is that benefiting you?** InDesign makes it easy to feel confident that all of the small details are taken care of. By using Character and Paragraph Styles, you're able to know that your text is formatted correctly across your document. With master pages, you're able to know that your pages are formatted correctly across your document. At the point of exporting or packaging a document, InDesign will prompt you for broken links, missing text, overset text, etc. which is really convenient. No matter how many times I've checked over my document, the check usually finds something. ### 36. I'm not even kidding you! I love the different page layouts that are possible. I can set up a typical book layout, or I can set up spreads that are more like a brochure. I can also set up multiple spreads with varying page sizes and page numbers. I also love the feature of making alternate layouts. BOOK so easy to do. It's so easy it is to integrate adobe cloud. All of my team members use it as well and are able to easily tap into the files that I am working on. I like that I can seamlessly place images in a document either by dragging and dropping from my folder, or import through the file tab. It's really awesome how much I can check the color separations right in the side pallet. **What do you dislike about Adobe InDesign?** When importing illustrator images from the cloud, there's a white background. But really there isn't a a whole lot that I don't really like about InDesign. It's literally a must have for publishing. The only downside of using InDesign I think is that you have to have a cloud subscription to use it. It would be so nice if a person from editorial could go in and make the needed text edits. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe InDesign:** I would recommend setting up your workspace exactly how you want to begin with and saving it.You don't want to lose your flow because you don't know where your pen tool is! Another tip I would give it so make sure you check out the tutorials every now and again. They have some really cool stuff in there that you might not know existed. **What problems is Adobe InDesign solving and how is that benefiting you?** There are so many business problems that you could solve using InDesignAt my company, we have primarily used Adobe InDesign for book layouts of all of our student editions and teacher's guides. We also use it to set up posters for trade-shows. Another really important use we have for InDesign is to create all the print collateral needed for the Sales teams and Marketing teams. It's extremely handy to be able to work cross platforms (mac and pc). ### 37. There is a lot of tools and it isn't completely intuitive to use. I find this is the same thing with other Adobe programs as well. Once you get past the initial learning phase it is such an easy and efficient program to use when you need to create documents. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe InDesign:** Take the time to learn how to take advantage of all the tools within the program. The tools make it easy to create a cohesive document where you can edit the small, but very important details. While I’m still working to achieve mastery, the power of the tool is apparent. Built with easy review and approval tools, iterative design capabilities, and so much fine control over the appearance of the product, I know I can complete any publication design task in inDesign. **What do you dislike about Adobe InDesign?** As I say in the title it’s a bit large and uses a huge amount of my systems resources. Even with a high quality MacBook Air, my computer sometimes grinds to a bit of a crawl when working with the Adobe creative cloud and inDesign in particular. On stronger machines this wouldn’t be an issue. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe InDesign:** Be sure to check out the tutorials and online videos. The basics aren’t hard but getting the hang of the detailed editing capabilities can be tricky. But keep at it! **What problems is Adobe InDesign solving and how is that benefiting you?** I’m not loving that my machine sometimes gets extremely hot while using inDesign (and forget about using multiple Adobe products at once), but that said, it makes my job frankly possible. With covid requiring cuts, I had to step up and do full document and report creation in a way I had never had to before. Adobe inDesign makes the basic work easy, but has this huge power just beneath the surface. I do love using inDesign and doing so gives me confidence in what I create.
