I use Adobe connect about 4 hours per day Monday-Friday and seldom a day goes by where I am kicked out of my classroom, my students are kicked out, we have audio glitches/delays, etc. I have very high speed internet (usually 100 mbps down and 15-20mbps up) and other websites and applications do not have the same stability issues. **What problems is Adobe Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** It's always stability issues. It is nice to be able to let the teacher setup the classroom in a way that works for him. The ease of connection for audio and video needs to improve as well. There have been a few times when things did not connect well and there was no rhyme or reason to fix it. The most popular are those which display your face and you talk. Essentially, it is a phone call with a picture. All things have their purpose. However, the top end of the market looks to be a more thoroughbred and flexible breed. One that would allow the showing of presentations with the audience could respond either by an icon of voice. A room where you could have discussions in the main forum or private in breakout rooms. The ability to brainstorm something on a whiteboard or run polls and quizzes is doable. The list of features is quite long. Adobe Connect is one of the main platforms at the top end of this online-room market. Many of the competitors to it are trying to catch up and copy its features. But what of Adobe Connect itself? Once you see the name Adobe, you might hesitate. For those that have worked with other of the Adobe family products, one meets an interface which takes quite a lot of time to become accustomed to. Photoshop and Illustrator comes to mind. People often seen as a negative. However, one could say the more controls there are, the more flexible and useful the product. It takes time to get used to it. I have been using Adobe Connect for some years now, and I’m regarded as quite proficient with the software. I teach other facilitators the interface and therefore am perhaps somewhat biased. The recent migration towards HTML5 Has been a bit of a rocky road. Migrating from Flash was always going to be a problem. But doing so while having all the Adobe Connect servers running reminded me of a line concerning painting a train while it is moving. Yes, there have been quite a few dark days. It appears these may be over. For teaching collaborative groups, Adobe is the best platform I have used. Though it is also the most recent. However, the interface allows MP4, MP3, PPTX, and PDF. It is flexible. Adobe Connect is thus really useful. Users usually find it so - but only after they have had a few one-to-one training sessions. We can have all of our curriculum uploaded for easy document sharing. I also like the virtual classrom/breakout room set-up and the host-chat feature to keep our center communicating effectively when we're in sessions. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** The connection is shaky, despite multiple updates trying to fix it. We have had numerous days where both teachers and students are repeatedly kicked out for "lost network connection," despite no outside internet issues on either part. We also run into frequent audio problems where one person cannot hear the other, or when we can, the voice sounds distorted (Darth Vader-like, according to one student). The breakout room feature is nice to use when students work in collaborative groups. Students can communicate via webcam, mic, and chat in both the primary classroom and the breakout rooms. Students can screen share in the breakout rooms as well. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** There to seems to be some issues with students getting kicked out of breakout rooms. This presents a problem for the students and the teacher. As a teacher, you have to move the student back to the room frequently. Students often forget what room they were in and miss collaboration time when they get kicked out of the room. Getting kicked out of the breakout room creates frustration amongst participants. **What problems is Adobe Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** At my school, we use Adobe Connect for our live sessions. It's also very reliable and also allows slide decks to be pre-uploaded into the room, for multiple "presenters" to share and advance on their own. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** In the latest version, the most annoying feature is something that was added (and was not at all needed) - it's a feature that alerts the HOST to see when people exit (or return) back into the room; it's annoying because if the HOST is in the middle of writing something in one of the chat or presenter pods-all writing capabilities are completely frozen if the "alert - exiting" message pops on screen; it means precious seconds are lost, if the HOST is trying to communicate with the presenting team. It's also good for contacting international students that I can't call on the phone. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** Screenshare is awful (slow and doesn't work all of the time). Also, the video recordings are not actually videos (it seems to be fully interactive with all of the pods) and this could be good in some situations, but it also makes the recordings glitchy. It would be good to have the option to just record it as a video so it will play on all computers and will appear exactly as it did during the meeting. And it's great that there's finally a flash-free version, but it doesn't work right when the meeting host is still using the flash version. It's also difficult to play a video during a meeting (we usually end up having to just put a link in the chat and then everyone watches it on their own). Also, it can be very unstable whether using the browser or the app. Sometimes it stops responding or kicks me out of my room and I have to reload it. If it's open in the background, such as during office hours when students can drop by, then it doesn't even warn me if it has lost connection or closed the room. Sometimes I have to try over and over for several minutes to even get into the room. The interaction tools (chat, Q&A, Polls, Breakout rooms) allow for a range of options that helps manage a lesson to suit most students. It would help in an educational setting if we could control the flow of chat from / between students, by allowing individuals to use the chat pod openly or just as private chat to the host. In the latest release of the platform, there have been a few improvements, such as being able to rename the breakout rooms, although as the names are not applied to saved pods for later assessment, this feature is only useful as the sessions are being run. Animated gifs can be loaded into a share pod and viewed individually. Would have been even better if the same gifs embedded in a PowerPoint presentation were also animated. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** Connectivity can be affected by server / internet loading, occasionally crashing either individuals or the whole session. The translation of PowerPoint content to the Share pod causes random reformatting of text boxes and diagrams, to remove arrows, horizontal lines and shaded shapes. Given the amount of time it takes to create these resources in a way that gives us meaningful teaching materials, to say it is frustrating is way off the mark! If more than a little work is added to the whiteboard in a live session using the pen / box tools, the session slows down, and can grind to a halt so that the room becomes unresponsive unless the work can be cleared - difficult to do if the room has locked! Work on whiteboards by individuals in breakout rooms is often deleted or corrupted in a way that makes the results very difficult to interpret. Needless to say, students who lose their efforts are frustrated and upset, and I then do not have a record of their achievements. Saved breakout rooms which contain a record of student work are also often deleted. Since switching to the latest version of Adobe Connect, there are a whole host of niggling bugs that make daily use of this platform as a live lesson classroom very frustrating for both the teachers and the students. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe Connect:** This platform has great potential, but needs some concerted work to iron out minor glitches that affect functionality and usability. If you are using it just for meetings, that should be fine, but if more regular with many different users, be prepared for some non-smooth operations. **What problems is Adobe Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are generally able to deliver education to students who have no other options open to them, most of who gain tremendous benefits from the arrangement, thank you. ### 26. I also really love the improvements that have come recently in the HTML client — I’m looking forward to the day I can be teaching in class and manipulating published Captivate files with a tablet while walking around a room of students. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** The only limitation I’ve been running into are the inability to share pure HTML content in a meeting/seminar room share pod. With flash heading out, I’m very hopeful that that’s a temporary problem. Our primary authoring tool is Captivate, so I’d like to see it be a little more universal for Connect to accept Captivate’s published files. I'd also like to be able to share straight HTML without having to wrap it in a Captivate publish — if I can write HTML, I should be able to share it and let my students manipulate anything I've made. I’d also like to see smoother integration between Connect and Captivate Prime, but I haven’t tested the recent improvements to persistent room linking and I’m guessing they’ve fixed a lot of my complaints (though I believe this was more of a Prime problem than a Connect problem. Eventually, I'd like to see interactions that I set to report L2 interactions in Captivate show up in both Connect AND in Prime without any issues. Right now, I can get poll results in Connect, but this isn't enough for the changing landscape of virtual learners. If I set something to report quiz results in Captivate, I want Connect to interpret that and have it exportable to Prime so I can get all my results in one place, regardless of how I presented them to the classroom. **Recommendations to others considering Adobe Connect:** Ensure that you buy sufficient host licenses for your organization. Meetings and seminars require meeting and seminar host licenses to keep the rooms open for more than five minutes, so you’ll also want to assign these to users who are trained in hosting meetings and managing layouts. It has security and privacy making it outright impossible for someone uninvited to enter. To greater increase security, usernames and password with set website links are created for meeting rooms. The tracking feature is very elaborate, explaining each and every piece of user activity. You can also implement the use of quizzes on the same platform. You can make the presentations be shown at a different angle or layout so that it might be easier to understand for some students with a different way of learning. The platform is also entirely multilingual and the translations are on point. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** I dislike how the user interface is created, it is as if user-friendliness was not even consider when the platform was being created. Features are important but how will people use it if they can't even get to it? When I use the platform, I can't share the audio of my computer while sharing my screen. Since the company sent us home, due to the pandemic this software has helped us to keep the meetings at a distance, what we like the most is the fact of having different rooms to meet, being able to share screen, and send us files in real time, which has made it possible for us to hold meetings, group or personalized with each member of the department, so that the workflow is maintained even if it is a remote work. In Adobe Connect, you don't have to go over to any other platforms to do multiple functions, which is ideal for tutoring capacity. **What do you dislike about Adobe Connect?** It does all of these functions badly! It takes forever to pull anything up; it crashes frequently, the library is not searchable, the notes section can't have two people writing in it at once.
