ACDSee Photo Studio 2019 Review **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Steve D. | Business Application Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** August 20, 2019 **What do you like best about ACDSee?** We use two features very frequently: (A) simple viewing of images, including scrolling through folders of such images; once the initial image is open, skimming through lots of images is very easy and very fast using the keyboard, and (B) simple cropping/resizing of images, which is extremely straightforward and easy to understand. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I wish the initial loading of an image would occur faster, as well as the switching between modes (e.g. Quick View mode --> Edit mode). Depending on image, it can take 10-15 seconds before the image appears when opened in ACDSee, even on a fairly well spec'd out laptop. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** The great thing about ACDSee is that it's simple and easy enough for beginners to use for quick tasks yet still has a ton of features for editing and managing images that appeal to the more experienced user. Transition from a competing product, such as Adobe Photoshop, is fairly seamless and much less expensive. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Basic editing of photos for posting to our intranet site and use in marketing materials. The tagging feature is also helpful for organizing photos that may be spread across multiple folders. The benefit is that our more senior staff has been able to focus on other areas since these tasks are so simple in ACDSee. ### 2. Most people will find everything there that they'd be used too in other programs and sometimes even more. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** After years using certain software it's difficult to change to a new layout that has more options than what you are used to when you have a lot of files to get through as you are programmed to go through an image a certain way, so it takes adjustment that might be costly for you. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** If you are sick of paying monthly fees for applications that are slow and crash often then switch over to ACDSee and save yourself money and time. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** The worst problem with other software is ingestion and the time it takes for photos to load, ACDSEE doesn't have that issue, it's quick to import and the photos are crisp with basically no load time. Also, another bonus is having a raw photo preview in normal folders when the application isn't open, super useful! ### 3. Images can easily be grouped under keywords and have descriptions added as the EXIF data that will permanently stay with the picture. Image enhancements work brilliantly in the non destructive Develop mode. The auto button in light equalisation mode is magical. The program is fast,. I have over 80,000 images across several network drives and it only takes a couple of seconds to find anything. Anyone into sorting out a lifetimes collection of photographs could not do better than use this. So important - One purchase and it is yours for life, unlike others that stop working when you don't renew the yearly rental. ... I could say so much more but just try it for yourself and see I am right. I am 81 and had no trouble learning it. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Some of the text on the screen is very small and sometimes difficult for my old 81 year old eyes to take in, but no real problem when you get used to it. If it is running and you create a new folder elsewhere in a directory photostudio will not find it until rebooted. There may be a way around this but I haven't found it yet. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Simply try it and see for yourself how good it is **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was a photographer in the 1950s and have kept all my negatives. They have all been digitised over the last 10 years and Photostudio has been a perfect way to catalogue them and add captions as required. It is so easy to select any group I want to show.. The work flow is very good and I also like file storage. I actually like better than Lightroom and Photoshop as I find it more understandable to use **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I am still learning layers and it seems somewhat more complicated than it may have to be. yet most of my edits are single photo and I do not do a lot of composite photographs choosing to be pure with one photo only--so I think it is more I don't use the layering enough to become versed at it. Otherwise there are some minor things I would change--once you have masked areas for color equalizer and go to duplicate the mask in light equalizer, the mask is no longer there---this is only and issue for color--for other areas not the same. i also think the sharpnesss tool that Lightroom has is slightly better as it lets you isolate the edges of an object vs the entire object (with sliders)--I wish ACDSee had this feature. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** The youtube tutorials are well done. I only use Edit mode and never use develop mode as I find edit mode works for my workflow best **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I like having the software on my computer vs on line--very fast editing and I have developed a quick workflow with my two year use of the software which is a great benefit and makes it hard for me to look at other editing software choices ### 5. So many features that it's almost impossible to find something simple like making a contact sheet, that you'll spend at least 15 minutes trying to figure out where and how they categorize what task it is you're looking for. The system has a "sync to cloud" feature that I have ZERO desire to ever use, but for some reason I can't get it to stop sub-loading itself as a process at startup. Even when I do have it disabled, the sync hangs around eating up resources whenever I open ACDsee and I have to kill it every time I exit the program. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I hate how bloated and full of useless features it is. I'm not going to use 90% of the crap it clogs the UI with. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** I need a GOOD photo management system that allows for simple editing/color correction/cropping to prep images for webstore display. I think I'm done with ACDsee, it has become fat and bloated with "features" I don't need and far too costly for the small amount that I use of it. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** KILL CLOUD SYNC PERMANENTLY! The noise reduction and sharpening tools are excellent, both with great adjustability. Exposure, light control and color is fabulous. I shoot in RAW format, which works great with ACDsee's Light Equalizer feature that works great for enhancing images, including repairing dark shadows and nearly blown out highlights. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Quick view mode tends to not fully render the image, but it at least helps me find the image I seek, then I'll go into View mode or Edit. The Develop mode is powerful, but awkward to manage sometimes. The facial recognition feature is lovely, but often incorrectly identifies people. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Anybody looking for an affordable, high quality photograph management and editing software, ACDSee is an excellent choice. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have been using ACDsee since version 2.0 of the original ACDsee product. As the product has matured and was developed into Photo Studio Ultimate, an affordable and powerful photo editing and management tool, it is my primary tool in photography. I am able to rapidly process my images so that I can turn over to my clients quickly. The facial recognition helps me find people, especially in my disorganized family pictures. ### 7. I use it in a custom photo lab for all my editing and have recommended it to my customer for years. The basic editing functions are miracle-workers for even non-professionals. As an octogenarian, using this software is well within my ability to bring photos back to life. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I have yet to figure out masking and layering in spite of tutorials, even though many years ago I did this in Picture Publisher. I also didn't know that an advanced video card works better, and I and didn't want the expense of upgrading my computers. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** We primarily scan and restore photos. We out-lab badly damaged images, but I perform miracles everyday for my customers on unbelievably damaged and faded photographs. Our customers won't let us retire. ### 8. I love the layering feature to form composite images. The repair tools are great and customizable to any situation. It also offers an excellent photo management system all contained in the same software software package as the editor. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** The only issue I have with using ACDSee is that it is not as well known and accepted as Photoshop and when applying to editor positions, companies are looking for Photoshop experience. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Take the trial offer and give it a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed. This software saves you time and money. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I find the whole editing process so much easier than Photoshop. I do a lot of composite imaging and it is really so easy with ACDSee. The ability to isolate areas within an image for editing is huge. Combining separate images with the layering tool is seamless and so easy. ### 9. In edit mode, besides a full range of manual tools, it has a macro called Crunch that makes my photos look like they came from a much more expensive camera. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** The user interface is not well thought out and not well displayed. There is a considerable and to a great extent unnecessary learning curve. The layers and text features are functional but not yet well developed. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I publish an almost daily blog of photos and videos of wildlife and nature, and with a large volume of images and recurrent editing requirements I need a full-featured photo workshop that has everything. ACD Ultimate 2019 is not perfect but it's better than anything else out there. ### 10. It has the majority of features I need in an intuitive package. When I need to find something I can do so without a lot of searching or resorting to Google just to figure out where an option or feature is Located within the software. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** The downsides are the upgrade costs each year, a small issue I have with repetitive announcements I keep receiving about upgrading to older versions that I can not seem to clear or delete and some minor ease of use things that I still have to use Photoshop for. I think the integration with external filters could be a little improved. I use the NIK collection filters and I still find myself going back to Photoshop to implement them as it is just easier to use from that platform. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** I think ACDSee is a great alternative to some other software that is available in that it has many good features and is easy to use and navigate and is constantly evolving. I have used ACDsee for a very long time since it first became available as a picture viewing software. It has come a very long way since the small company from Victoria, BC **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am using ACDSee to do my watermarking, color and level adjustments as well as cropping and straightening photos because the interface is much easier to use. ### 11. It perfectly suited my cataloguing needs and over the years has grown into a full blown Photo Editor and even has layers. When layers came in I also dumped Photoshop though ACDsee doesn't have as many features as Photoshop it covers 95% of my needs. I have also tried Lightroom out but kept coming back to ACDsee because I liked it much better. The downside is the last couple of versions tend to crash a bit too often particullarly if I have a directory open that another program like Vuescan is copying images to. Also, like pretty much everyone else they are being pretty slow to support Canons latest CR3 raw format which is quite frustrating as it has been out for quite a while now. Overall it is however a standout program as I have tried many others but keep coming back. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Crashes a bit too often Doesn't support Canons CR3 raw format. Can be very slow to start up **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Not currently supporting Canons CR3 raw format but other than that I think it is better than Lightroom **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** My primary problem is cataloguing a large image collection which ACDsee does very well. Would be better to utilise the limited screen size with less information and more steps to get to the information needed. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Go for ACDSee as it is all you ever need during post processing your pictures! **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I take many pictures of buildings and sky lines with high tower blocks. I like it because it has many options that allow me to edit, control, manipulate and retouch everything that is related to the production of digital images. In addition, it not only allows me to edit them but I can also analyze them so that I can export them to the format that suits me best. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I do not know if advantage or inconvenience, but every time you edit an image in jpg, when saving it, automatically in a hidden folder called "Originals" leaves the original copy. If the next day (it happens to me from time to time) you realize that it has happened to you with the processing or has done too much harvest, you give it a "return to the original" and as if nothing had happened. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** This tool is one of my favorites in my work as a designer. The more the better, of course. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Review what you are doing with your photos and then compare ACDSee with what you are using. Download the full working product, learn how it functions, and then compare it with what you are using for your post processing. I believe you'll find ACDSee is far superior as well as less cost to anything else on the market. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can clean up my photos with the Dehazing tool and sharpen the photo with the Clarity tool. Combining images, color correction, and balancing. Most of my work is to fix old images, repairing defects from age and so forth. It takes practice to learn the hows and whys, but it was worth it. People appreciate my work. Cataloging and categorizing images has helped me to find images that meet a certain need. Adding information to am an image, name place, and location, helps keep track of things I did years ago. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Some process are not overly intuitive watching the Q&A and online demonstrations helped. Still can't select a circular object... Should be easier to draw a circle and then move and resize to select an area - seems to be trial and error with mostly error. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Watch the tutorials, and live Q&A sessions that are offered. They may offer ideas for things you may not have considered. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** My image library is better cataloged & organized. The record macro tool allows automated edits to be applied to many photos **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** brush size on red eye reduction does not hold last used setting. when editing the same brush size for this is often used on many photos in a row and it needs set every time **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Make sure you take advantage of the sorting capability before editing. use the macro recording tool or batch edit tool for multiple files requiring the same treatments. make the preview window and thumbnails big and the file tree small I loose the histogram **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Acdsee enables me to prepare 100s of files in short order. I can resize all images so they are the same and balance exposure and color so all photos match. the healing and clone tools allow me to remove unwanted items I used to have to run them through photo shop till they improved these tools ### 17. I use this function every day as a part of file organization. This helps out tremendously when it's time for our cases to be submitted to the courts. Being an executive assistant, organization is super important, and this application allows me to go above and beyond. I have even had employees ask me which program I use, so that they may use it as well. I will always use ACDSee and will always recommend them to whoever needs a photo management software. I honestly think they are the best out there. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I cannot think of anything I dislike about this application. For what I use it for, it works for everything I need. I don't do much editing, so perhaps making that part of the app more user friendly. It's difficult to think of anything I dislike when I've never ran into a issue with ACDSee. This program has truly been so beneficial to my work productivity. I would be list without ACDSee. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Utilizing the header/footer text when printing photos has been very helpful for organization. I would suggest learning this if you have not, and also how to print multiple photos to a page. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are an engineering firm for legal cases, so ACDSee has made it very easy to view and print photos. This is extremely helpful for deposition prep and keeping things organized. The legal system uses Bate Stamps when entering exhibits into the system, so being able to have the original file name on the photos makes that process extremely helpful. ### 18. Custom tags, geotagging, collections, catalogs, ratings, and various other parameters can be set to help make finding one file out of thousands incredibly easy. Almost everything can be embedded in the file as well, so sharing among multiple PCs or rebuilding a library's metadata is extremely simple. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** While the searching is robust, there are some things that are lacking which would be very helpful. Most searches seem to be using "or" so when searching for tags, it is difficult to drill down and find something with tag1 AND tag2. Also, most search parameters require values, so I've not found a way to, for example, find all files that do NOT have a specific property set. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** After a house fire, we lost all of our printed pictures and what pictures we did have, both print and digital, became much more important to us. Not only where the pictures sentimental, but organizing the thousands of cell phone and DSLR pictures taken over the years became a must when trying to remember details of items owned, pictures of our house before the fire, etc. ### 19. There are no steep learning curves, transparent pricing, and year round discounts available for each and everyone. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Maybe the least liked part of being on a perpetual license would be the yearly upgrade offers. That is all gone now with their 365 subscription plans. I can upgrade each and every year with the latest and greatest photo and video editing software from ACDSee. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** For designpreneurs like myself who want a straightforward no-frills, low learning curve kind of photo and video editing software, I highly recommend taking a look at ACDSee. Most people would go straight to "Ad" but should really look into "Ac" first. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** The problem with most photo and video editing software is that they most often have steep learning curves. More powerful features at a very low learning curve. ACDSee fits the bill as it tries to balance powerful features with a low learning curve and an affordable pricing point. I was actually looking at all the possible solutions to my problem of having a Digital Assets Manager, Photo Editor, and Video Editor in one package. It is very difficult to pick just one, or even 10 things that might be considered a favorite, but I think the most obvious and the first "touch point" for any user, is the clear and simple menu system which gives immediate access to the commends and functions that are most likely to be needed by virtually all users, at least at first. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** In more recent versions, I have found that my system sometimes stops responding, and I have to restart the program. I feel this is most likely a clash with some of my anti-virus software. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use ACDSee for a variety of relatively simple tasks, but more often than not, it is for image management, and for this, I find it very clean and easy to use, whereas some of the other tools I have tried were a lot less clear-cut in handling the files and retrieving the data quickly and making it readily available. ### 23. If I really have to pick something, I would say that it still needs improvement to work with the streaming cloud storage. When there are a lot of files within a folder or a compressed file, the application becomes unresponsive and/or ends up crashing, so I'll have to restart the application and try again until it works. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** If you have a lot of photos to manage - and everyone does - and your multimedia library is a big chunk of clutters everywhere, get this software immediately and start cataloging your files. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** I like to compress my photos to upload to and download from the streaming cloud storage. Combined with this solution, I can use ACDSee to easily view the photos within these compressed files without having to manually download and view the photos uncompressed without having to use any third-party software. I also like to view my photos as slideshows, which doubles as a screensaver to protect my monitor screen. The slideshows look very nice with different transition effects which come with the software. ### 24. It's ultra-reliable, easy to use and has my complete confidence. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** There is no single key shortcut to "Apply Last Used" settings in Develop mode. It's hard to believe this has been overlooked. Someone who's managing the development roadmap needs to talk to real professional photographers. Every time I edit a large project, I desperately miss having a single key shortcut for this. Another thing that would be great to be fixed is orphans. The database remembers every removable data source which eventually fills it with trash that needs to be cleaned out to maintain performance. Remembering removable data sources should be an opt in option rather than the default. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** ACDSee has an outstanding balance between ease-of-use and functionality. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** ACDSee lets you embed metadata in the files themselves or automatically create sidecar files. This is a huge benefit so that you can easily rebuild the database in the unlikely event that it gets trashed. I recommend ACDSee even if you have the Adobe Creative Suite. It's much more productive than Lightroom. I've got both and only use camera raw when I'm in Photoshop. Lightroom has been on my hard drive for years but just never gets used. Ironically, every time they have a major new upgrade I go in and take a look at it thinking maybe now is the time to change. But I keep coming back to ACDSee as the better product. ### 26. It is quite easy to use (compared to Photoshop and some others) and you do not need to be an expert to get high quality results in very little time. Overall, ACDSee offers you most of the options you need to deal with your photographs at a reasonable price and integrated in only one application. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Photo editing could be better. Although easy and suitable for most usual tasks, some of them could really be improved (red eye reduction,editing with text) and we miss features like "face swap" (which, given several people group photographs, merges and swaps faces to get one photo with everyone smiling or looking at the camera). Although my main objective was to organize my “art” photos and stock photos, the software works well for personal photos too, and I upgraded to Photo Studio Ultimate 2019 because of the facial recognition tool. I've also taken advantage of the advanced editing features, though I'm still finding my away around them. Most valuable to me is the Smart Erase brush which is great for removing overhead wires and background items that detract from the main subject. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I'm a little disappointed with the facial recognition tool. I've had it assign the same name to multiple people in the same photo, and it has a really hard time with people who are very young or very old. It's faster than tagging every photo, but you have to spend time checking and fixing, so I'm not sure it's worth it. Although I’ve been good about transferring them to my computer, I haven’t been consistent in they way I organize them. This became even more of an issue when my interest in photography as an art form was rekindled a few years ago. In addition, as a web designer and blogger, I also have a large collection of stock photos. Most personal photo organizers recommend filing by date and/or event. That’s great for snapshots taken at family gatherings and conference, but trying to find a picture of a sunflower (for example) was like looking for a needle in a haystack. ACDSee has enabled me to organize my photos in a way that makes sense to me and I've been able to get more enjoyment out of viewing both old and new ones. ### 30. Thousands a year. Also "recovering" old photo's from decennia ago. Starting at about 1890. And I used it for work, mostly houses. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Not a dislike but a problem for me and more people: Because I'm partly "colourblind", mostly in green/brown and blue/purple so also reddish, I color photos often to stark. Because I often use some basic corrections I will like to see a feature to make it possible to chose 1 or more common corrections in a batch. Like putting the RAW photo's to JPEG or so. Not the way it is now. Because the corrections make many mistakes. Mostly to light, to much contrast etc. So I can batch only a few from hundreds. Perhaps more languages. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** Try it out and don't be afraid. I use only a part and there is much to discover for all kind of needs. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Mostly color, contrast, clarity, dark and light parts. ### 43. It is very powerful and does not get the respect it deserves. It has allowed me to streamline my workflow so I can edit even a large number of photos in a short amount of time. Customer service is very good. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I do not like the text tool in ACDSee Ultimate. It needs to be more robust to allow for more complex designs. The company should do a better job in providing online training videos. The videos by Alex Watson were great - provide more showing how the program can be used to show examples of how pros use it. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** This program gives you the biggest bang for your buck, and is worth taking the time to learn. Watch the tutorials by Alec Watson and those from ACDSee on Youtube to help you get started. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Most images coming out of the camera can be improved and ADCSee allows me to make those changes quickly and easily. I can sort, group and tag photos which helps to keep me organized. The Mobile Sync had some quirks with my iPhone but I found useful online info and had it resolved. **Recommendations to others considering ACDSee:** If your looking for an alternative that allows management, retouching, phot editing, composites and more for a fantastic price that is easy to understand and use; then look no futher. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Using the non-destructive layers allows easier composites for creative work. ### 45. With each new release I have reported that the bug is still present, including in the 2019 version. Each report has been acknowledged, yet the bug remains. It's been over 2 years. THIS. This is what I dislike. Please fix bugs. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Long time user (since somewhere around 2004/5). I really just use it for managing my images, that's all. ### 47. The addition of layers a few iterations ago increased it power a good deal. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I really disliked when the newest version came with "face detection" turned on. Who in the world would want such a thing? Took me five minutes to figure out how to turn it off. Please, don't do this again. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Apparently, I can't hold a camera at a steady horizontal to the landscape. I use the 'rotate' tool more often than I'd like to admit. I seldom use a flash, as I find it easy to adjust the lighting in the program. ### 48. A very long time ago it worked well if very conservatively but since then it makes the picture way too bright! Nevertheless, no other product can adjust the lighting in the same way. I also particularly like the 'Import' feature set, **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** I use I7 machines and ACDSEE Ultimate has become more and more ponderous (slow) it is in desperate need of an overhaul to restore some agility to the experience. Although having the various versions allows users to overcome the licence limit, to an extent, the better solution would be to concentrate on the 'Ultimate' package (making it more agile to use), removing the restrictions on the licence (I know others follow the ridiculous 2 system only rules of Adobe but many do not) making all copies 'home' use e.g. 5 systems and lowering the price permanently to around the $70 range of Affinity/Luminar etc. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is used basically for the LightEQ feature. I use an older version for uploading all my photos onto the machine, it provides just the features I want for upload management. ### 49. I'm a professional photographer and deal with hundreds, even thousands of images on a busy photo shoot. One day, after being totally frustrated by the complex, time consuming lunacy of Adobe products, I downloaded ACDSee to find out what it was all about. What a difference! ACDSee was not only much much faster than the Adobe products it's simplicity saved me countless hours of tweeking my images up to pro quality. Every year ACDSee improved and I purchased the updates the instant they were available. The 2019 ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate truly lives up to it's name. It really is the ultimate photo cataloging AND processing program. If you have not used it, If you are a serious photographer, do yourself a huge favor and download a trial version. Hint, first thing to try is the "dehaze" adjustment when editing a photo. Wow. One click and you'll never look back. **What do you dislike about ACDSee?** Problem editing files over 20,000 pixels wide. **What problems is ACDSee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Rapid processing of images, the totally wonderful Dehaze, Light EQ, Color EQ, Show on Map, Cataloging, search, not requiring importing the images into the database but using the existing folders, the entire develop process is perfect to processing multiple images for panoramic and sphere images.
