Cutting Edge Strategic Finance Platform for Lean Finance Teams **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Tom R. | Senior Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025 **What do you like best about Abacum?** Abacum has tremendous flexibility in terms of its data and analysis capabilities. The ability to create custom metrics and data transformations directly in the data set has allowed us to automate our leadership team's complex pipeline requirements. We previously tried to build our custom pipeline reporting metrics directly in Salesforce (Tableau) and Mosaic but were unable to do so. Abacum releases product enhancements faster than any software platform I have ever seen - it is not uncommon for them to release one or two product updates every week - and offers more integrations to modern technology tools than its competitors. We have completed overhauled our Finance tech stack over the past year, including migrating our ERP, and chose Abacum partly based on its integration with Rillet. Finally, Abacum's Excel connector is one-of-kind among strategic finance platforms and allows teams to maintain hybrid workflows in both Excel and Abacum. **What do you dislike about Abacum?** We have experienced a few bugs in the tables and reporting (e.g., percentage variances for individual line items adding up rather than calculating at the total level). These bugs are usually either quickly resolved or the technical support team has provided a work around. We intended to use the Paylocity integration but have been unable to due the fact that Abacum's integration partner doesn't pull in some of the key fields that we use (we also had a similar issue with Mosaic). The Abacum team partially made up for this by allowing us to substitute our Paylocity integration for the Excel connector. **What problems is Abacum solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Abacum for reporting (pipeline and operating expense), workforce planning, and general budgeting and forecasting. The system helps us automate manual processes that were previously done in Excel and has enabled new valued-added reporting and analysis that wasn't possible in our previous strategic finance platform. ### 2. Also creating a budget from the forecast has saved us so much time. I also like the way Abacum integrates with Netsuite and how easy it is to maintain the chart of accounts and map accounting logic into economic logic for management reporting / decision-making. We are using Abacum every single day for our reporting needs and insights. **What do you dislike about Abacum?** Sometimes the flexibility of the platform is challenging. I sometimes know how I would do something in excel (for example using look ups / index match between data sets) but I am not sure how to do it in Abacum or it isn't possible. **What problems is Abacum solving and how is that benefiting you?** - Monthly reporting (previouly our process was incredibly manual with copy pasting journal entries from netsuite into a ghseet) - Quickly seeing the results of various scenarios on EBITDA and cash flow - Comparing versions / scenarios against each other and visualisation In general all of this is benefiting us with much more reliable data and time saving. ### 3. Solutions like this often struggle to balance flexibility and automation, but Abacum manages this exceptionally well. Its modeling, data handling, and presentation features are highly adaptable, which has allowed us to seamlessly incorporate the tool into our daily operations. It is rapidly becoming our primary resource for all things related to reporting, forecasting, and budgeting. All of our data is integrated, our mappings are set up, and our models are in place. We are now looking forward to bringing a substantial number of ad hoc reports onto the platform as well. The support team has been outstanding—I'm contacted at least once a month to discuss our progress, any challenges we might be facing, and to share feedback, which they actively relay to their product team. In fact, several of our suggestions have already been implemented since we began using Abacum a few months ago. The implementation process was smooth, and the team was excellent in guiding us through some complex use cases. **What do you dislike about Abacum?** There are a few things where the platform is a bit underdeveloped (ie can be a bit slow sometimes, manual inputs vs formula coexisting well, transaction classification is difficult at our scale, auditability could be a bit better, certain allocations could be easier, etc.). But the reason we chose the platform was because we believe the team could make these things happen. They've consistently delivered. Building ad hoc reports can sometimes be a little slow, I wish there were a reporting feature that allowed you to query data in an easier manner, and the excel plugin is still maturing. **What problems is Abacum solving and how is that benefiting you?** Abacum has helped get everyone in a single place for our complex budgeting and forecasting cycles, which has minimized back and forth and helped the stakeholders feel a lot more ownership around their processes, rather than having things sit in the black box that is finance at times. It is also replacing monthly BVA's and other monthly reports freeing up a lot of time and also providing more detail. ### 4. This makes it easier to communicate insights across teams. **What do you dislike about Abacum?** There is still room for improvement in the modeling capabilities. Building complex scenarios or multi-year models can be challenging. Better guidance or workflows for creating sophisticated models would make the platform even stronger. **What problems is Abacum solving and how is that benefiting you?** Abacum helps centralize our financial data and keep it automatically updated through connected datasets, which reduces manual work and the risk of errors.
