The CMS did not dictate and give me opinionated HTML markup and that I was in complete 100% control, where other CMS's make it hard to control the entire HTML output where you spend ages working around problems to get it to work how you needed it. Along with a friendly bunch of people in the community to ask for advice and guidance, this has made me stick around and keep using the piece of software and CMS that has given me a great career. **What do you dislike about Umbraco?** There is very little to dislike about Umbraco in my opinion. The user interface is straightforward and most editors are very happy with the day-to-day editing. We have an external team of developers who customise a lot of the features for us, and these usually work well and the editors find them easy to use. **What do you dislike about Umbraco?** Our site is extremely large with over a thousand nodes and hundreds of users to manage. I feel Umbraco was designed to handle smaller sites, as user management and searching this many nodes is a bit clunky. It also seems to be a bit tricky to integrate with other systems, but this is done by a third party for us, so I cannot comment on how easily this is done, only that communication between Umbraco and other systems is often unpredictable, whether it's via XML or an API. **What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?** Our content is managed by a large number of editors. It was quick to set up and easy to implement, even with a custom architecture, which made it ideal for getting the project off the ground fast. One of the biggest advantages is that it's built on the latest Microsoft technologies, which means I can immediately take advantage of everything new in the .NET ecosystem. It’s a full-featured CMS, giving me flexibility both for frontend development and for building APIs, without needing to rely on multiple tools or frameworks. The integration with Visual Studio is also impressive—Umbraco exposes all its elements in code, making development smooth and efficient. It handles everything from content management to user authentication and security, which saved us a lot of time early on. Its lightweight runtime and small RAM footprint also make it incredibly fast, which is ideal for lean infrastructure in a startup environment. Umbraco is an all-in-one platform that scales with you as the project grows. The Umbraco team works incredibly hard behind the scenes—they’re constantly improving the platform and genuinely care about making it the best CMS out there, with responsive and helpful customer support. Code written for previous versions doesn’t always carry over cleanly, which can make upgrades or reuse more difficult. Despite that, it’s still a very capable CMS for anyone working in the Microsoft ecosystem. **What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?** My project is a system with multiple administrators managing content and data, while frontend users interact with the results on a daily basis. Umbraco turned out to be a perfect fit because it comes with a built-in member system that supports both admin users and frontend members out of the box. This saved a lot of development time and reduced complexity. Additionally, querying and filtering results was straightforward thanks to Umbraco’s flexible content structure and support for custom logic. Compared with several other content management systems I have used, Umbraco's back end experience is far superior. The hierarchical presentation of site content closely matches the way our site architects map out the content of a site. This in turn, makes intuitive sense to editors as they update the site. There is a good balance between presenting enough information to understand and execute a task and, on the other hand, keeping the interface simple to avoid overloading the user with options. This is true for both the development and editing experiences. Help text is easy to configure, and presented in a way that helps a new user understand an input field when they first encounter it, but doesn't get in the way of experienced editors. Input fields can be grouped intuitively in multiple ways to aid understanding. Extensive online documentation makes implementation relatively easy. It is possible and usually quite easy to add custom controls for editing content. I've built icon selectors, data-driven drop-downs, and a spreadsheet-style tabular data control among others. Dashboards can be created to provide a presentation of custom data for more in depth integrations with outside data. Content Apps allow yet another way to customize an editor's interaction with content. I've used these for things like triggering email sends from an "event" page or exporting data for use in an external system. For those using their hosting platform, Umbraco Cloud, customer support is done by way of a chat widget in the cloud interface and/or by email. The two systems can be used interchangeably. Support staff is always helpful and friendly. **What do you dislike about Umbraco?** As with many content management systems, Umbraco is always evolving. This is generally a good thing, but recently required us to rebuild entire websites because of a shift to a new platform (.NET Core). On top of that, the next version will require us to revamp the back end because they are changing the underlying infrastructure for customizations. I'm hoping these two significant changes are followed by a more stable upgrade cycle in the future. Their timeline for long term support (LTS) versions is, in my estimation, too short. I don't like the idea of having to do a significant upgrade on a website every two years because the major version of the site is no longer supported, which opens the site up to any newly discovered security vulnerabilities. I realize the pace of the development of new web technologies is generally pretty breakneck, but I'm a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Longer LTS cycles would be a selling point for any CMS, I think. **What problems is Umbraco solving and how is that benefiting you?** It allows us to build websites for our clients that are highly editable and customizable. ### 47.
