Personally, Signal would be my choice. Far more modern and intuitive than WhatsApp, with end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp has been known to have issues with security. Hackers and snoops have used third-party spy apps, WhatsApp Web, stolen user QR codes (directly from their phone), and can even register another person's phone number -- all to access private conversations.
