Zen Cart is a good match for stores that have complicated fulfillment processes, dropshippers, and other kinds of businesses that need to modify the base delivery of a shopping cart.  It's much easier to make changes to Zen Cart - and have them work easily in newer versions - than with other systems that force you to either modify core files or make changes that won't survive upgrades. 

Zen Cart is also very developer friendly and takes measures to make upgrades forward compatible so that any changes you made in the past can easily be moved forward. 

Zen Cart has an active user forum and a full set of documentation at https://docs.zen-cart.com/.  Both user and developer documentation is provided.
