# Why do you review on G2?

I've come to realize that it really takes a unique personality type to write reviews. I worked at Yelp for about ten years and have written thousands of reviews on that platform. During that time is when I made a discovery: some people are reviewers and some are not.

The most obvious example of this in my life is the dichotomy between my wife and I. Despite the fact that we have both used Yelp to determine virtually every business that we have ever patronized together, she has never written a single review herself. And I know many others on both ends of that spectrum: those who write reviews for everything that's reviewable, and those who never even consider it.

For me, I rely so heavily on consumer reviews, that I eventually had the realization that I should also be contributing my own feedback to these products, businesses, etc. I think it's incredibly helpful to the entire ecosystem and truly believe I'll do it for the rest of my life.

But what about you – why are you here?

What is your G2 origin story?

What brought you here initially?

What is your primary motivation when it comes to writing reviews?

Are you a reviewer on other sites, or just G2?

(My wife is an amazing person despite her lack of review writing, and no I am not just saying this in case she ever sees it 🤣)

Same situation as Brett. I research purchases to death and in most cases am review dependent during a key point in that process. I wanted to do my little part online by hopefully adding a forthright and concise review that hopefully steers someone in the right direction particularly when hard earned money is on the line. I can't remember for the life of me how I found G2 -- Linkedin would be my best guess.

We all profusely thank the mystery person on LinkedIn who brought you here and got it all started with your review of Riverside.fm!

By the way, a podcast that I regularly listen to always mentions all of the different platforms that you can find their podcast on, and they always jokingly bring up "Podbean" because it's so obscure. But I see you gave it a glowing review, so they must be doing something right over there!

Brett, your explanation of the value of reviews corresponds to my feelings. I rely on them heavily so I am motivated to offer them, either to tell the world about the value of a little-known software or to warn others about pitfalls.

I have left reviews on G2, Capterra, TrustPilot, and Appsumo. Some have been compensated, some have not.

Recently, Amazon has begun offering AI summaries of reviews. I am curious if this is a trend that G2 and others will pick up on. I hope not. :-) I find it less than helpful as the bot attempts to mash everyone's experience into a summary.

I wanted to place my reviews at a site I could trust and I did some due diligence before deciding to opt for G2.

I had placed reviews with G2 before and I always found their approach to be interesting and innovative. There was always encouragement to place reviews on software/applications that I had experienced before. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to continue leaving reviews due to other commitments. I was then kindly invited by Brett to come back to the site and contribute on this forum.

My satisfaction in writing reviews is to express my experiences and share those with others. Through this sharing, I gain exposure to other people's thoughts, observations, insights and experiences and invariably I gain a greater understanding of the subject matter while developing new perspectives. Additionally, I endeavour to provide honest and open appraisals of software and applications so that they can help individuals and companies when it comes to deciding which ones are most appropriate for their needs and align with their business goals.

I was a reviewer at Capterra and Gartner Peer Insights in the past. However, due to time constraints, I was unable to keep my commitments to them and duly left them. Interestingly enough, I still retained my G2 account and never closed it.

That's a really thoughtful response!

I totally relate to the time constraints issue. I think it's not always about the actual minutes that it takes, but that it requires a deeper level of brainpower to write sometimes. Is that the case for you?

Hi Brett,

Yes, it certainly takes longer to write something meaningful and insightful that adds value and engages the reader.

I was initially invited by some friends of mine who had launched a product that was on G2 as well. And since I was already using it, I left them a review to help other potential customers understand what they'll dive into.

Regarding motivation, there are two main drivers for me when it comes to leaving reviews. #1 is to show people who are on the fence about buying software what to expect. #2 is to show the companies (I think most of them read the reviews) what their problems are.

I'm also leaving reviews on a few other sites.

Both of those motivations are very well-founded, and I'm sure, appreciated by each audience.

What other sites do you write on? As I've said to others, if they happen to be in the same space as G2, I promise this is not a community for casting judgment for involvement with competitors :)

I am genuinely curious to learn what other places are doing a good job at motivating users on the site to contribute.

1 - A few months ago, one of my platforms gave me the opportunity to share my experience on G2 by writing a review of their product. This was the gateway that opened up the chance to connect with others and share my perspective.

2 - After several changes in my personal life, I discovered my passion for expressing ideas through writing. I found that reviews offer a way to convey my insights and experiences, which now deeply motivates me.

3 - I’m excited about the idea of showing the world how Maura Alicia analyzes, perceives, and uses the programs she evaluates. I want my reviews to help other users gain a clearer understanding of the product and make informed decisions.

4 - In addition to G2, I write reviews of places and restaurants on Google and share content on Instagram about the creativity behind the billboards in my city.

A big thank you to either Flipsnack, InDesign, Box or Adobe Bridge for opening that gateway! You're an excellent writer and I'm sure your reviews have helped others who have come across your reviews.

What's your favorite review that you've written on Google?

Was researching software in the past and then came to a point where I kept using enough software that I should write a review.

Research of SW.

To give others a good idea of how real world users see the product and to add to the community, because I myself appreciate reviews as well.

Yes, I leave reviews on other platforms as well.

All good reasons!

What other platforms do you review on? (Even if they are G2 competitors, you can mention them, this is a safe space 😆)

I am just always curious where people like to review, whether it be other software review sites, or places that have little to do with software, like Amazon.

Quite a few years ago, I was researching for some sort of software solution, and I was trying to find people's thoughts on different products. I ended up stumbling upon G2 and found it useful.

Same as answer in #1.

My primary motivation is that my reviews can help others to not have to go down the path of using a bad product.

I almost entirely leave reviews only on G2.

Sounds like similar to everyone else

I was researching software and came across G2

researching products

I like that I can share my experience about software that I have used, hopefully helping some users avoid some pain points I experiences, and the the Gift Cards are a nice bonus.

I am a reviewer

I was researching software and came across G2. I noticed that there was a comprehensive list of products so it's now my go to for research.

I was invited to get more involved, hence why I'm here. Oh, and the mention of Stuff We All Get! ;-)

Knowing how important the reviews are to my research, I'm hoping to pass it on by reviewing the products I have knowledge of for others researching for their needs.

I don't normally leave reviews but with genuine incentives for some reviews and the comprehensive nature of G2, it compelled me to get involved.

### Comment 11

I review on G2 and other platforms because, as a marketer, I see firsthand how critical reviews are in improving performance and understanding audiences. I believe in returning the favour by providing my feedback, even if it’s for a product or company that hasn’t directly asked for it. To me, both positive and negative reviews contribute to a well-rounded perspective and offer value to others navigating similar decisions.

I've often used G2 for advice on tech tools for our website, and now I’m also looking to expand my network and knowledge. I genuinely enjoy sharing feedback and always check back to see how it’s received—reviews are a powerful part of the ecosystem.

I agree about positive and negative reviews both being valuable in their own way. Have you ever run into a situation where you had a negative experience, but were hesitant to write a negative review? For example, maybe you were inclined to write a negative review about a product, but you had a good relationship with someone at that company? Those are tricky situations to navigate.

Yes absolutely! I would much rather speak with the person than leave a review. Allow the opportunity to rectify prior to a review, this can spin a negative review into a positive on how they handled it!

I can relate to your experience! I only started writing reviews a few years ago after moving to Canada. As an immigrant, reading reviews really helped me avoid bad stores and find good service, and now I want to contribute back to the community.

My journey with G2 began when I received an invite on LinkedIn, and I was eager to connect with others who appreciate sharing their experiences. I love writing reviews to help people make better choices, just like those reviews helped me when I first settled here. I also contribute on Google Maps, but I feel like G2 offers a great opportunity to explore software insights in more depth.
