If you've been burned before, the real fix is a model with no usage variable at all, not just a cheaper one. Anything with a per-request or bandwidth piece will drift month to month however well you plan. Self-hosting HAProxy or Traefik keeps it simple, you only pay for the servers they run on, so there's nothing metered to catch you out. If you'd rather have a vendor and support behind you, Progress Kemp's flat license is the rare managed option that doesn't meter usage, which is why the predictable-cost crowd tends to like it. So open source isn't the only safe bet, a flat license counts too, it's really the usage-based tiers you want to steer clear of.
