# What should small law firms evaluate when choosing an AI legal assistant for matter management?

Small law firms often manage matters with limited staff and tight budgets, so an AI legal assistant needs to fit into existing work rather than add overhead. Tools in this space vary in how they support matter management, from organizing documents and deadlines to summarizing case files and drafting. I’ve noticed that firms weigh factors differently, including confidentiality and data handling, integration with existing practice tools, accuracy, and ease of adoption. What should small law firms evaluate when choosing an AI legal assistant for matter management, and which factors mattered most in your experience?

For a small firm, I'd ask who will maintain it once onboarding is over. If every new matter needs documents uploaded twice and permissions checked in two systems, that admin work belongs in the cost calculation too. A trial with a closed matter and a clear list of everyday tasks could make the trade-offs much easier to see.
