# What should pest control companies look for in route optimization software, and how does PestPac approach it?

I'm evaluating software and trying to understand what separates basic stop sequencing from real route optimization — and how PestPac handles it specifically.

You're asking the right question. Basic stop sequencing just orders the stops you've already assigned. It doesn't ask whether those stops should be on that route in the first place. Real route optimization considers customer time windows, geographic clustering, technician skill sets and licensing, and drive time between stops, then builds routes that minimize windshield time across the whole operation. For most pest control companies that difference shows up directly in fuel costs, technician capacity, and how many stops fit in a day.
Here's how we approach it with RouteOp, PestPac's algorithm-based optimization engine. Its Best Fit capability evaluates where a new or rescheduled appointment fits most efficiently across existing routes rather than just appending it to the nearest day. It sequences stops based on time windows, geographic clusters, and which technicians are qualified for the work. For high-volume operations, Dynamic Planner handles bulk scheduling, and the engine scales territory-wide for multi-branch companies. There's also no per-route fee, so optimization cost doesn't grow with usage.
One decision criterion worth adding to your evaluation: ask how each system handles a same-day reschedule, since that's where the gap between sequencing and true optimization shows up. We're glad to demo that exact scenario with your route data if it would help.
