# What's the best way to use a mask in Adobe illustrator?

Currently, I use a clipping mask, but it's now effective as Photoshop masks, so I was wondering whether there is a better way to do that.

I view Illustrator masks as finishing options to a final piece; whereas Photoshop masks are great for a non-destructive workflow. For example, I will use black and white images to add texture to vector pieces using the mask feature to add grit or wood grain, etc. I will also occasionally use the masking features to test insetting images/objects inside containers without destroying the object I am insetting. This allows for further refinement without merging the object to anitcipate client pushback.
