Enterprise risk management software helps organizations understand and manage the risks that could affect their strategic and operational objectives. It connects business objectives, risks, causes, controls, accountable owners, indicators, evidence, actions, and escalation so leadership can see how exposure affects the organization as a whole.

GRC software typically combines governance, risk, and compliance activities, often emphasizing regulatory requirements, policies, audits, controls, and compliance testing. While these capabilities are important, they may become separate administrative exercises if they are not connected to the business objectives and risks they are intended to protect.

The categories overlap, and vendors often use the terms differently. The more important question is whether the platform creates a connected accountability structure. Organizations should be able to determine what outcome is at risk, who is accountable, whether controls are working, what evidence supports that conclusion, and when an exception must reach executive or Board attention.
