# What is the difference between a CMMS and a facilities management platform like FMX?

<p class="elv-tracking-normal elv-text-default elv-font-figtree elv-text-base elv-leading-base elv-font-normal" elv="true">I've been evaluating different tools and keep seeing the terms CMMS and facilities management platform used somewhat interchangeably. For those of you who've worked with both, what's the practical difference and why did you land on FMX? Trying to make sure I'm comparing apples to apples before I bring a recommendation to leadership.</p>

A CMMS handles the maintenance side of operations: work orders, preventive maintenance, asset records, and parts inventory. That covers a lot, but it leaves out everything else a facilities team is responsible for. Coordinating events, managing a vehicle fleet, tracking utility spend, planning long-range capital investments.

FMX is built as a full facilities management platform with a CMMS at its core. That means your maintenance team gets everything a traditional CMMS offers, and your broader operations team gets the tools to run the rest of the building alongside it.
CMMS core: Work orders, preventive maintenance, asset tracking, and parts inventory.
Beyond maintenance: Capital planning, event and reservation management, utility management, fleet management, IT asset management, warehousing, and reporting, all in the same system.
If you only need a maintenance work order tool, a basic CMMS will do. If your operations team is responsible for more than maintenance, you want a platform.
