Many businesses don't have a lobby manned by a person anymore to check in and out visitors. And the old paper-and-clipboard check in is often inaccurate and tossed at the end of the day.  

Lobby (or visitor) software is a way for an employee to send notice of an expected visitor, check in, and check out the visitor. Some lobby software will allow the visitor to self-check, notifying the host automatically, and to do a DMV background check (useful for K-12 schools).
