LibreOffice Writer is a free alternative to Microsoft Word, which is updated frequently, so it is often able to read and write new Microsoft file formats before Microsoft Office users, who will need to upgrade their applications.
Coverage of Word features is generally 90%+ for the latest versions, and full versions of LibreOffice runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS, as well as a more limited version for Android and iOS from Collabra. There is also a portable version.
