An LRS is a central database to collect and review data specific to your learning system(s). Basically, if you have an LMS or a place where you have learners come and watch videos, take courses, or do some eLearning content, then information about the learner's progress can be sent to an LRS to be used for reporting purposes.
Why not just use your LMS reporting? Good Question.
Traditionally, an LMS just tracks course completions and their own built in quiz scores. But an LRS can track things like how long a person watches a video or reads an article, whether they are accessing it via PC or Mobile, if they are interacting with a simulation or scenario, and other cool things like that.
Another way to think of it is like this: An LMS is like the "school" you go to and an LRS is like the "transcript repository" that keeps all the grades.
LRSs can be stand alone or exist inside an LMS (if you're lucky).

Hope that helps!
