HEC-GeoRAS is a GIS-based extension that can help in the development of partial HEC-RAS models. It consists of tools and utilities for processing geospatial data in ArcGIS.

With the help of HEC-GeoRAS, the following elements can be added to a HEC‑RAS model by manually drawing or assigning polylines and polygons within the ArcGIS user interface: river centerlines, channel bank lines, flow path lines, cross section cut lines, manning’s roughness polygons, levee lines, ineffective flow area polygons, and storage area polygons.

Use of the HEC-GeoRAS extension has its limitations, however. For example, if the user discovers an error or needs to make changes in the defined GIS data, the user needs to start back in ArcGIS, make the necessary changes, and then repeat the model development process again.

Engineers have successfully avoided these limitations through use of GeoHECRAS.

GeoHECRAS is a standalone program with strong built-in GIS editing capabilities. The software is able to integrate a variety of geophysical data directly into the model and effectively achieves the same result as several separate programs—all without exiting the application.
