# What is end-to-end encryption?

Tresorit uses end-to-end encryption to guarantee the security of your files in the cloud.

It means your information is encrypted before it leaves your device, and is only decrypted once it reaches the receiver - be that yourself on the same or another device, or someone you collaborate with. That means along the way all you (and Tresorit, or a possible hacker) could possibly see is gibberish.

Using end-to-end encryption, Tresorit encrypts every file and relevant file metadata on your devices with unique, randomly generated encryption keys. These keys are never sent to our servers in unencrypted format. Accessing files is only possible with a user’s unique decryption key.
