BCM refers to Business Continuity Management. This includes identifying and documenting what is needed to stay in business one process at a time. It also refers to a planned response or action in the event some aspect of a normal work environment is lost due to an unplanned disruption. Loss of Facility, Loss of Key employee's skills, Loss of Technology, Loss of Supplier or Customer are the categories anticipated by most contingency plans. Software is not needed to record a BC Plan or an IT focused DR Plan. Most companies start with Word based documents.

When the volume and complexity of plans recorded in Microsoft Word documents becomes unmanageable a BCM software Application will do 2 things: 1) Move the Plans to Cloud based repository so they are available when needed by many people all at the same time 2) record the information in a database driven format so information can be abstracted and used in reports that will help determine your level of preparedness or resiliency. Consult the 2 major standards bodies for more information on this discipline. DRII.org and BCI.org
