Short answer: It’s a non-linear multitrack audio editor

Longer answer: A multitrack audio editor lets you work with more than one audio track at the same time. This means each instrument in a song can have a track, or each participant in a podcast. You can then turn down the volume on a loud host, or add a reverb to just the lead guitar.

Also, you can cut segments of specific tracks without affecting any track but the one you cut. And none of these audio edits in Audacity affect the original audio sources. Your friend’s bass guitar track with the sneezing fit still has that sneezing fit you cut out in Audacity. So if you need to go in and try editing the track again, you always have that as an option (that’s what Non-Linear Editor means).

You can then export the whole project as a stereo or mono audio file, in a multitude of formats.
