Amazon EC2 is an infrastructure as a service (IAAS)  where you can able to create a machine virtually over the internet it offers with an high availability  and it offers with differwnt types of instances where we can save the costs.

It is a server created on the AWS cloud so that you don't have to have a bare metal server at your data center. It is AWS's responsibility to take care of its electricity, security, network, internet, and some other features. You can access it anytime from anywhere, just need the internet to connect with the AWS console. You can scale up this server anytime and whatever configuration you want, you can have it. Same with downgrade. Regarding the pricing you have many options to pay, upfront, pay as you go, and some more options. You can opt for Linux, UNIX, Windows, mac os, and even with pre-configured software too.

Amazon EC2 is basically like a VM. You can build your VM in the cloud and you can do most of the tasks that you are supposed to do with a VM. The advantage is you can upgrade and downgrade depending on the usage. You can easily access the server and host your website/application here.
