STAR test scores are always going to depend upon the grade level of the child and their individual circumstances. Star scores are fairly straightforward with the score representing the grade level and months of the school year that the child is reading at in a numerical form. For example, a score of 5.4 represents the score of a fifth grader in the fourth month of school. You can then take the child's star score and compare that to where they are expected to be. For example a third grader at the start of school that is reading at a 4.1 is reading at about one grade level above where they are typically expected to be. Conversely a fifth grader at the start of the school year who is reading at a 3.5 is reading about one and a half grade levels below where they need to be. You can use star scores to help you gauge how effective your regular classroom instruction is as well as how effective any interventions are.
