Salesforce Authenticator is a mobile app that enhances login security for Salesforce products. It provides multi-factor authentication (MFA) through push notifications and one-time codes.

If you org is enabled for 2FA then after entering the username and password then 2nd step is to enter the code that is displayed on the authenticator app,  It serves to authenticate the user , by asking user to enter the passcode from their mobile devices that is already configured.
