# What Does Managed EDI Actually Mean? Can I manage EDI myself without technical knowledge?

"Managed EDI" gets thrown around loosely in this space as different providers really mean and execute differently calling themselves managed EDI. Here's what it should mean and how to tell the difference.

1) Managed EDI means the provider handles the EDI setup, partner communication, onboarding, implementation and support as needed for you. You're essentially outsourcing your EDI operations to a team of specialists. The right managed provider should be handling partner onboarding and setup, document mapping and testing, certification with each retailer, ongoing compliance updates when specs change, transaction monitoring and error resolution, and integration with your ERP or accounting system. An example is Elevate platform ( https://edielevate.com ) that manages all of the above for you and works well even if you have no EDI knowledge on your team.

2) On the other hand, self-service EDI means the provider gives you the software platform, but you're responsible for setting up trading partner connections, building document maps, running tests, troubleshooting errors, maintaining compliance when retailers change specs, and managing your own integrations. This works if you have someone on staff who understands EDI standards, mapping logic, and communication protocols. For a small team with no EDI background, this is typically where things break down.

The difference matters most when something goes wrong. With self-service, a failed ASN or a 997 rejection at 4 PM on a Friday is your problem to debug. With managed EDI, that's your provider's job and a good one catches it before you even know there was an issue.

Can you manage EDI yourself with no technical knowledge? On a self-service platform, realistically no. On a managed platform, yes — that's the entire point. With Elevate, our clients don't need to understand X12 formats or AS2 protocols. They tell us who they trade with, and we handle the rest. When Target updates their specs or a new partner requires a different document set, our team makes the changes — no tickets, no learning curve, no IT hire required.

If you're evaluating providers, ask them exactly what "managed" includes. Some charge extra for mapping changes or new partner setups that should be part of the service. With Elevate, it's all included, no surprise fees.
