# What do you use Notebook for?

As a service bureau, I want to know if this is something that we can use for our practice.

Hello Albert -

BlackLine’s Notebook functionality provides a centralized repository for users in any role to create and track notes for their assignments. It provides an alternate home for commentary which is valuable but not necessarily formal or intended for the eyes of auditors after certification. Notes can be linked to a reconciliation or a task in BlackLine, or they can be created ad hoc.

Example use cases:

An auditor creates a note to track a PBC deficiency and includes helpful instruction in the note for how to address the deficiency.
A reviewer creates a note for a preparer to indicate additional documentation is preferred in the preparation of future reconciliations.

The preparer will be able to see the details of this note and update the reconciliation without requiring the reviewer to decertify the reconciliation, an unnecessary step.

At the same time, the note is not associated to the face of the reconciliation when it is certified, so unlike comments in BlackLine, the note will not be available for auditor scrutiny.
