I started using After Effects in 2006 and, since then, I've used it for a variety of tasks.

I initially used it as my primary video editor when producing commercials.  I would import my video footage, create a new composition, and edit the footage directly inside AE.  Then, I would add animated text or sparkles to accentuate my project.

I've also used AE to take miscellaneous objects out of my video footage by using the Rotoscoping tool.  There was a water bottle visible in a shot that we needed to remove.  I took that isolated piece of footage inside AE, created a mask around the bottle, and used tracking/content-aware fill to make it disappear. 

Over the past five years, I've started to incorporate more specific pre-made templates into my work that you can find through various vendors.

Overall, it's primary purpose is in its name "After Effects". It is best used to enhance your video projects by incorporating all the tools and effects it offers.  However, as I mentioned, you're not limited to just enhancements.  You can edit your video and audio directly inside AE as well.

My life as a video editor has been made easier and I've been able to express myself creatively through all the features that AE offers.

After Effects is mainly used for creating motion graphics and visual effects. i can animate text and shapes, create cinematic visual effects, combining multiple videos or images, i make intros, using transitions, and even elements 3D objects. Basically, anything that moves on screen or needs visual enhancement can be done in After Effects.
