I honestly had to Google that...

Notes and Domino applications are software programs written in the form of one or more Notes databases, and often supplied as NTF templates. This type of software typically is focused on providing business benefit from Notes' core collaboration, workflow and messaging capabilities.
Written in: Java/Eclipse (9.x Standard) and C++ ...

To me, they are basically anything you want to build outside the real of suite products (i.e Word processing, Database, Spreadsheet & Presentation software)
