When it comes to cybersecurity employees are a critical line of defense against a business being compromised. They are also the weakest security link. Today’s cybercriminals consciously target employees to more easily infiltrate their network, and the networks of their suppliers and customers too. They count on their ability to easily exploit human curiosity, error, and greed, and it only takes one negligent employee to click for them to succeed!

In recent 2018 research it was found that there was an 80% increase in phishing attacks that impersonated someone familiar to the target, to make the phishing even harder to detect. The same research also found that many phishing attacks still managed to reach employees inbox’s and bypass sophisticated technical security defenses. Webroot’s own results from organizations using our security awareness training have shown phishing click rates of 37% falling to 13% and employee behavior being modified within only a few months of the correct training being introduced.

The problem is that most employees are totally unprepared to identify targeted, suspicious and malicious web content, putting themselves and their employer at risk. And as we’re seeing, for higher-value hacks, cybercriminals are putting in greater effort to socially engineer employees and abuse their trust. Senior executives especially, who have higher-level corporate permissions and access, are often targeted by very sophisticated so called ‘whaling’ campaigns.

The good news is that all sizes of business can afford to strengthen their overall IT security strategy through effective, relevant, interactive computer based training content that educates employees on the risks and how to avoid being compromised. Security awareness training works and it significantly protects any businesses bottom line, with the returns far exceeding the costs of doing nothing.

Regular, continuous, phishing simulations and relevant computer-based security awareness training programs improve security and reduce the direct costs of having naïve and untrained employees.
