# Target just sent me an EDI requirements packet, what does it all mean?

The Target EDI requirements packet looks overwhelming if its your first time doing EDI but really its just a checklist. They need you to send and receive business documents electronically in a standardized format. The main ones are the 850 (purchase order from Target), 855 (your acknowledgment), 856 (advance ship notice when you ship), and 810 (your invoice). Your system needs to handle these automatically, manual entry won't work at Target's scale.

Two things to pay special attention to: Target's compliance scorecard tracks your accuracy and timeliness, errors mean chargebacks deducted from your payments. And the routing guide is critical that says routing violations are typically the single most expensive chargeback category with Target. Make sure your fulfillment team reads it before the first shipment, not after the first chargeback.

Here's the path to compliance:

1) Get approved as a Target vendor — this is the business relationship step that should already be in motion if you received the packet.

2) Register on Partners Online (POL) — Target's supplier portal for EDI specs, scorecards, and routing guides. You'll need an internal team member to set this up.

3) Get your GS1 identifiers — Target requires GS1-compliant UPC/GTIN codes on all products and GS1-128 barcodes on shipping cartons and pallets. Register at gs1us.org if you don't have these yet.

4) Connect with Elevate ( https://edielevate.com )— this is where we take over. Our team sets up your AS2 or VAN connection to Target, maps all required documents to Target's specs, configures your account for your product categories and fulfillment model, and handles all communication with Target's EDI team directly.

5) Testing and certification — Target requires formal testing before go-live. We submit test documents, validate against Target's requirements, work through any issues, and get you certified. Most suppliers complete this in one to two weeks.

6) Go live — orders start flowing. We monitor your document traffic, catch errors before they become chargebacks, and keep your maps updated whenever Target changes their specs.
