A PBX is generally classified in the same group as other low-voltage building infrastructure; by low-voltage, we're talking around 12V or so and generally speaking, pretty harmless should someone inexperienced complete a low-voltage circuit with their body. Other building systems in the same group as PBX systems would be intercom systems, building security systems and their video surveillance etc. PBX systems are, from my understanding, going to rely on CAT5, CAT6, CAT7 internetworking cables used to give end-users access to the internet, which ultimately is wired back to a building's IDF (that room with all the wires and servers/data storage). PBX systems will typically have a monitoring software and can be managed over the internet in a remote capacity or onsite typically by a company's or a rented building's IT personnel who also install PBX handsets, change voicemails should someone go on vacation, or change someone's extension altogether should they move to another department or leave the company. Cisco would be a great example of a reliable and widely used network communication company that deals with both the hardware and software components that make-up communication, data storage/database, net world wide networking infrastructure our global economy depends upon. lol, definitely just pulled this from the depths of my brain considering I'm not an IT guy and simply recruit engineers for a living. That aside, if a recruiter can describe an industry they recruited for even five years ago like I just did with the above, they're not doing your company/technology justice, lol. Granted, I could have just said, "A PBX System is simply just another terms for IP or internet phone system," lol.
